OPERATING MECHANISM FOR HINGED CLOSURES AND THE LIKE Filed Jan. 18, 1938 1N VENT OR.
Patented July 18, 1939 UNITED STATES OPERATING MECHANISM FOR HINGED CLOSURES AND THE LIKE Roy T. Axe, Syracuse,
N. Y., assignor to The O.
M. Edwards Company, Inc., Syracuse, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application January 18, 1938, Serial No. 185,566
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a screw operating mechanism for hinged closures having an opening and closing movement, as hinged windows, Windshields, etc., of motor vehicles, and has for its object operating mechanism permitting the screw to shift during the operation thereof while the portion of the window, to which the operating mechanism is connected, is moving in an arc during the opening and closing of the pivoted or hinged closure or window.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a window construction embodying my invention, the contiguous portion of the vehicle or the structure in which the window is installed, being also shown.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 22, Figure 1, showing the position of the parts of the operating mechanism, when the window is closed.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view, similar to Figure 1, showing the position of the operating parts, when the window is swung open about the axis of its hinge.
I designates the frame of a car structure formed with a window opening 2. 3 designates the window, the sash of which is pivoted or hinged at 4, it being here shown as hinged along its lower rail, so that it swings about a horizontal axis.
The operating mechanism includes a screw held from endwise movement and having a suitable handle, a follower or nut movable along the screw. when the screw is turned, and being pivotally connected to the window or closure at a point remote from the hinge, so that the follower and the pivotal connection move in an arc struck from the axis of the hinge 4, and a support for the screw pivotally mounted at a fixed point remote from the axis of the hinge, that is, pivotally mounted to the frame I to move on its pivot during the opening and closing movement of the window, and maintain the alinement of the bearing in the support for the screw and the follower or nut while it is moving in said arc.
5 designates the screw, and B the nut or follower thereon, this being pivoted at l to a bracket 8, here shown as secured to the upper rail 9 of the sash, with the pivot 1 extending horizontally at a right angle to the movement of the follower or nut lengthwise of the upper free edge of the window 3 or parallel to the axis of the hinge.
l0 designates a support or mounting for the screw 5, this mounting being in the form of an angle lever pivoted at II to a suitable bracket I2 secured to the frame I on an axis parallel to the pivotal axis I of the follower or nut 5, one arm of the support or mounting l0 being provided with a bearing I3 in which the screw is journalled, and the other arm I5 extending parallel to the screw 5 and having an angular portion at its free end provided with a bearing I6 for the screw 5 at a point remote from the bearing I3 and adjacent the sash 3.
The nut or follower 6 moves between the bearings l3 and I6. The screw 5 is held from endwise movement, and is here shown as provided with a handle I! at one end, the hub of which thrusts against the outer end of the bearing l3, and with a collar I8 at its other end thrusting against the outer side of the bearing I6.
The bracket I2 is secured to the frame I in any suitable manner, as by screws I9.
The window 3 closes against a suitable buffer or weather strip 20.
In operation, assuming that the window is closed, as in Figure 2, during turning of the handle I! in one direction, the follower or nut 5 follows along the screw 5 into the position shown in Figure 3, or in any intermediate position, and during this movement, the follower or nut 6 is moving in an are about the axis of its pivot 1, and during such movement, the support I0 moves on its pivot ll maintaining the bearing I3 alined with the nut or follower 6 in any angular position it may assume.
Owing to the fact that the support l2 carries the bearings l3 and [5 for opposite ends of the screw, this alining movement is effected without strains or binding effect, and hence the operating screw works easily and uniformly. Also, owing to the bearing I6 and the collar IS, the follower comes to a stop when the window is closed, so that continued movement of the operating screw can not dislodge the nut or follower off the end of the screw 5.
What I claim is:
1. An operating mechanism for a closure hinged at its lower end and having an opening and closing movement, comprising a screw and a follower thereon pivotally connected to the closure above said closure and at a point remote from the axis of the hinge to permit relative pivotal movement of the follower and the closure during the movement of the follower in an arc about the axis of the hinge, and a bracket having a bearing in which the screw is journalled, the
, bracket being pivoted near said bearing and at one end of said screw at a fixed point remote from the closure and having an angular arm extending in a direction lengthwise of the screw and having a. bearing for the screw at a point remote from the former bearing, said bearings being on opposite sides of said closure and said follower being movable along the screw between thebearings, the pivotal axis of the bracket being.
substantially parallel to the pivotal axis of the follower and the pivotal axis of the follower substantially parallel to the axis of the hinge.
2. An operating mechanism for a closure hinged at its lower end and having an inwardly opening and outwardly closing movement, comprising a screw arranged above said closure and a follower thereon pivotally connected to the closure at the upper end thereof to permit relative pivotal movement of the follower and the closure during the movement of the follower in an are about the axis of the hinge, and a bracket having 5 a bearing in which the screw is journalled, the bracket being pivoted above said bearing at a fixed point-remote from said closure when in its closed position and is provided with an angular arm extending in a direction lengthwise of the 1 screw and having a bearing for the screw at a
