UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICEQ ETHAN I. DODDS, or rrrrssunsrr, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FLANNERY rom:
COMPANY, or PITTSBURGH, PENNsYLv nIA.
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE FOR BOILERS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, and a; resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures for Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,-one object of the invention being to provide simple and eflicient means to facilitate the application of the parts to a boiler sheet in such manner that the closure devices of the structure shall be effectually clinched to the boiler sheet.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are sectional views showing an embodiment of my invention, and Figures 3 to 20 are views ofmodifications.
The outer sheet 'ofa boiler is represented at l and provided with a bolt hole 2, the wall of which latter is made rounded to form a seat for the rounded or partly-spherical head 3 of a staybolt 4, whereby the latter may have a flexible connection with the boiler sheet. In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the rounded head 3 of a staybolt is made with dia,
metrically opposite recesses 5' and the walls 6 at the inner ends of said recesses are made inclined in opposite directions respectively.
A ring or sleeve 7 having external screw threads 8 is located over the bolt opening 2 in the boiler sheet and provided at diametri cally opposite points with fingers 9; These fingers are bendable so that when their inner ends are made to engage the inclinedwalls 6 of the recesses 5 and the ring 7 is forced inwardly or downwardly, said fingers will be bent so that their inner or lower ends will be caused to project laterally from the.
I the inner face of the latter as indicated in Figure 2. An internally threaded closure 10 engages the external threads 8 of the ring 7 and betweenthis closure and the outer face of the boiler sheet, awasher 11 is disposed.
If desired the outerface of the boiler sheet.
may be made-With an annular recess or depress on to receive said washer.
It 1s apparent that when. the parts shall have been assembled in the manner above de scribed, and the closure 10'is screwed down against the washer on the boiler sheet, the
ring 7 will be caused to move slightly in an outward direction and the hooked inner ends of the fingers 9 caused to tightly or firmly engage the inner side of the boiler sheet, and thus the, closure devices will be securely clinched to the boiler sheet. It willbe understood that the recesses 5 in the bolt head are of such size relatively to the proportions of the fingers 9 that free movement ofthe bolt head on its seatinthe boiler sheet will not be interfered with and therefore the flexible connection of the bolt with the boiler sheet will be maintained.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 3, a clincher sleeve 12 is provided and made With depending or inwardly projecting fingers 13 having shoulders 14: at their inner ends to engage the inner face of the boiler sheet 1. In this construction the recesses 5 in thebolt head 8? may have their inner end walls but slightly inclined. The sleeve 12 is threaded externally to receive the internal threads of the cap or closure 10 and the edge portion of this capor closure rests against a washer 11 seated on the boiler sheet. I
In Figure 4-1- of the drawing, Ihave shown a ring 12 having an inwardlyv projecting annular flange 12 forming shoulders 12 and 12 12 rests on a washer 12 on the'outer face of the boiler sheet and the fingers 13 pass through the bolt opening and through recessesin the wall of the latter (as in Fig ure 3) and are provid'edattheir inner ends with shouldersll to engage the inner face of the boiler sheet. The ring 12, is threaded internally to receive an externally threaded cap or closure 1O and between the inner edge of this cap and the shoulder 12 in the ring In this construction the shoulder It de to the 12 a Washer 12 may be disposed. sired the ring 12 may be welded boiler sheet as indicated at 15.
If desired the upper or outer end portion of the fingers 13 may be bent as indicated i and 8, the bolt head 3' is formed with diametrically opposite recesses, such as indicated 18 and a one-piece cap or closure 19 is employed. Fingers 20 project from the inner face of this cap or closure near the edge portion of the latter,-said fingers first projecting inwardly and then downwardly through the bolt opening in the'boiler sheet and provided at their inner ends with shoulders 21 to engage the inner face of said boiler sheet. In this construction'a portion of the wall of the bolt opening is made cylindrical as at 22 and a portion is made rounded as at 28 to form the seat for the bolthead and the fingers 20 lie against the cylindrical wall of said bolt opening.
In the construction shown in Figures 9 to 13 inclusive, the bolt head 24: and a portion of the bolt 25 is provided with recesses 26 having the shape indicated in Figures 10, 12 and 13. A. cap or closure 27 is provided with an internally threaded portion 28 to receive an externally threaded ring or head 29. This ring is formed with integral laterally projecting arms 30 and from the latter, integral fingers 31 project in a direction to pass through the bolt opening in the boiler sheet and through the recesses in the bolt head. If desired a washer may be located between the cap or closure 27 and the outer face of the boiler sheet, or, if desired, this cap or closure may be welded to the boiler sheet. Instead of making the head of the staybolt as shown in Figure 13 it may have the shape shown at 24? Figure 14, or instead of providing the head of the staybolt with two oppositely disposed recesses, said head may have the Form shown at 24 Figure 1.5.
In the construction shown in'Figures l6 and 17, the bolt and its head has substantially the same form as that shown in Figures 9, 10, 12 and 13, but in Figures 16 and 1"? I have shown an externally threaded ring 32 having an angular opening 33 and fingers 34: to extend through the bolt opening in the l. boiler sheet and provided with shoulders to engage the inner face of said boiler sheet. The ring or sleeve 32 is screw threaded externally for the accommodation of threads within a cap or cl sure 35 and between the latter and the outer face of the boiler sheet a washer 36 may be disposed.
In the construction shown in Figures 18, 19 and 20, a cap or closure 37 to be mounted on. the boiler sheet 1 is threaded internally to receive a ring 38 and this ring is made with a slightly tapering inner wall 39 for the accommodation of a bearing member 10 for the head 41 of a staybolt 42. The threaded ring 38 is provided with a plurality oi: fingers d3 provided near their free ends with recesses to receive a bead 45 at the lower or inner end of the bearing membertO.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-latent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, of a clincher member having a part passing through the boiler sheet adjacent to said bolt opening and engaging the inner portion of the boiler sheet, said clincher member provided with means forming a closure over the bolt head.

In a staybolt structure, the combination with boiler sheet having a bolt opening, and a headed staybolt, of a clincher member having a part projecting through the boiler sheet adjacent to the bolt opening and engaging the inner portion of the'boiler sheet, and a closure member having threaded connection with said clincher member and cooperable therewith and wit-h the boiler sheet to firmly secure said clincher member to the boiler sheet and effect a rigid connection of the closure with the boiler sheet.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, of a staybolt provided with a head having'a recess. a closure, and a member connected with said closure and passing through the boiler sheet and the recess in the bolt head, said member having a part to engage the inner portion of the boiler sheet.
In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, of a staybolt provided with a head having recesses, a closure member toseat on the boiler sheet, and clincher fingers cooperable with said closure member and projecting through the boiler sheet and through the recesses of the bolt, said clincher fingers provided at their tree ends with parts to engage the inner portion of the boiler sheet in proximity to the bolt opening in the latter.
5. In a staybolt structure. the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening with a rounded wall, of a staybolt having a rounded head to seat on the rounded wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, said head having recesses forming inclined inner walls. an externally threaded ring provided with fingers to project through the bolt opening in the boiler sheet and through the recesses in the bolt head whereby the inclined inner In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- 10 mg Witnesses.
