ETHAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Application filed April 26, 1918. Serial No. 230,911.
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and .use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to closures therefor, the object of the invention being to provide a simple structure which will facilitate quick removal of the closure of the bearing sleeve to expose the head of the staybolt for testing purposes and which will admit of quickly replacing the closure and tightly securing the same at the outer end of the bearing sleeve.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a plan view with the cover removed, and Fig. l is a view of a modification.
1 represents a bearing sleeve which may be threaded externally the screw through a boiler sheet and provided interiorly with a curved face 2 to form a seat for the rounded or spherical head 3 of a stay bolt 4.
The bearing sleeve may be made with an extension 5 having an internal annular shoulder 6 which may serve to limit the movement of a cap or closure 7 and upon which the latter may rest temporarily when the parts are first assembled. The sleeve extension 5 is provided at its outer end portion with inwardly projecting curved shoulders 8 spaced apart to form notches 9 between them, and at or near one end of one of said shoulders 8 (or at one end of each of them) a stop 10 projects from the wall of the sleeve extension or from the annular shoulder 6.
Instead of making the sleeve extension integral with the body of the bearing sleeve 1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said sleeve extension may be made as a separate member 5 as shown in Fig. 4 to screw onto the body of the bearing sleeve, and this separate sleeve member may be provided interiorly with an annular flange or shoulder 6 to receive the cap or closure.
The cap or closure 7 is provided with laterally projecting lugs 11 adapted, when said cap is turned, to enter behind the curved shoulders 8, as more fully hereinafter explained. A shank 12 projects outwardly from the cap or closure and is provided with a right hand screw thread to enter an internally threaded socket 13 in a cover member 14, and the latter may have a hexagonal or other angular peripheral configuration as indicated at 15, to receive a wrench. The sleeve extension may also be made with a hexagonal external configuration as indicated at 16 to facilitate the application of the bearing sleeve to a boiler sheet.
When the parts are first assembled, the
By a reversal of the movements above described, the cap and its holding or locking means will be loosened and may be quickly removed to expose the head of the staybolt for testing purposes. It is apparent that the cap may be as quickly replaced and locked.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having internal shoulders near its outer end, of a cap located in said sleeve and having lugs to become disposed behind said shoulders, a stop for limiting the turning movement of the cap, a shoulder on said cap having external threads, and a member having a threaded part to receive .said threaded shank and adapted to seat on the end of the bearing sleeve.
2. In a staybolt structure the combination With a bearing sleeve provided With an extension having internal shoulders near its outer end, said shoulders spaced apart forming notches between them, of a cap Within said sleeve extension and having lateral lugs, said sleeve extension having .a shoulder to receive said cap, a stop Within the sleeve extension to limit the turning movement of the cap, and a member having a threaded socket to receive the shank on the cap and adapted to seat on the sleeve extension.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this 15 specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. V
' ETHAN I. DODDS.
