Description

T. A, SMITH.
WINDOW LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.16, 1920.
1,374,773. 7 Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ALOYSIUS SMITH, 0F ASHLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
' WINDOW-LOCK.
Application filed January 16, 1920. Serial No.
To all whom it mary concern Be it known that I, THOMAS A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashley in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, iave invented new and useful Improvements in vVindowLocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks for windows and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for automatically locking the lower sash in closed position as soon as said sash is lowered while permitting the upper sash to be moved.
Another object of the invention is to provide meanswhereby the lock may be easily released by a person inside the room or building.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention indetail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a View showing the invention in use.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the look.
In these views 1 indicates a part of the window frame and 2 indicates a part of the lower sash. 3 indicates the casing of the lock which has its base provided with projecting ends 4 for receiving the screws for holding the lock to the frame. One side of the casing is provided with an opening 5 and an opening 6 is formed in its top. The rocking lever 7 is pivoted in said casing by means of the pin 8 and said lever has its lower end bent outwardly to extend through the opening 5 when the lever is in one position. The upper end of said lever extends through the opening 6 and is adapted to be seized by the hand of the operator. A spring 9 is carried bythe casing and has its free end engaging the lever and tends to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
press said lever against the side of the easing with its bent end projecting through the opening 5. When the projecting end of the lever is pressed to one side by the fingers the spring will be pressed upon itself by the said lever as its lower part swings inwardly within the casing.
A plate 10 is fastened to the sash and this plate carries a projecting lug 11 for engaging the bent end of the lever.
It will thus be seen that when the sash is lowered the lug will strike the projecting end of the lever and force the same inwardly against the action of the spring. As soon as the lug passes said lever the spring will force the lever outwardly again so that its end will engage the upper side of the lug and thus prevent upward movement of the sash until said lever is moved manually.
In this way the sash will be automatically 7 looked as soon as it is lowered and the upper sash is free to be lowered and raised.
It will of course be understood that my improved lock may be used on the upper sash if desired.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is p A sash lock comprising a casing having its base provided with end extensions, means for securing said extensions to the window easing, one side and the top end of said casing having openings therein, a lever pivoted in the casing adjacent the top opening, said lever having a bent lower end passing through the side opening and its upper end passing through the upper opening. a curved spring in said casing having its curved end engaging the lever adjacent the bent end thereof and a lug on the sash for engaging the bent end of the lever. v
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
THOMAS ALOYSIUS SMITH.
