E. 85 H. S. ENSMINGER. SASH FASTENER.
No. 493,258. Patented Mar. 14, 1893.
ATTORNZKI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.)
EMANUEL ENSMIN GER AND HENRY S. ENSMINGER, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,258, dated March 14, 1893. Application filed May 17,1892- $erial No. 433,266. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EMANUEL ENSMINGER and HENRY S. ENSMINGER, both of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our present invention is an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent were granted to us July 31, 1883, No. 282,290, and it is embodied in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window having the sashes provided with our improved lock. Fig. 2 is a broken perspective View, showing in detail the arrangement of the various parts of the lock. Fig.3 is a detail inverted plan of the latch. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of the latch; and Fig. 5 is a detail cross sectional view, showing the relative positions of the latch and the base plate on which it is mounted.
The window frame 10, is provided with the usual vertically-moving sashes 11 and 12, the upper sash 11 being on the outer portion of the window, and the lower sash 12 on the inner portion, and these sashesare separated by a stop bead 13, which is substantially like an ordinary stop bead, except that it is provided with a series of lateral slots 14, which are adapted to receive the latch as described below, and which also register with similar slots 15 in a bead 16, which bead is secured to the inner side of a side rail of the upper sash. The above construction is like that shown in our aforementioned United States Patent. A base plate 17 is secured to the top rail of the lower sash 12 adjacent to one side of the sash, and on this plate is pivoted a latch 18, which has at one end an extension 19, adapted to enter the slots 14 and 15 of the beads 13 and 16.
The latch is provided at one end with a knob 20 which serves as a handle and in the under side of the latch and at the end opposite the knob is a transverse recess 21 in which is a spiral spring 22, which normally presses the latch into the slots in the beads.
One end of the spring presses against the latch and the opposite end presses against a stud 22? which is fixed to the base plate and projects upward into the recess. By this construction and arrangement of parts, not only the spring, but also the stud is covered and concealed by the latch itself, without requiring a cap, casing, or supplementaldevice for the purpose. When used upon low windows, the latch is operated by hand, but for use on higher windows, it is provided with a cord 23, which is secured, to the under side of the latch, and extendsdownward over the lower window sash to a point where it may be conveniently grasped by the hand, and in order that the cord shall not be unduly chafed, the upper corner of the sash is protected by a flange 24, on one edge of the base plate 17.
It will thus be seen that by pulling inward on the free end of the latch 18, or by pulling on the cord 23, it will be released from the slots in the beads 13 and 16, and upon releasing the latch its spring will cause it to instantly engage the slots, and it will be readily seen that as these slots register, the
two sashes may be held at any desired height, or the lower sash may be raised without moving the upper sash, and it may be held in a desired position.
.It will be seen that the lock is extremely cheap, that it may be quickly applied to any window, and that it cannot be accidentally unlocked by the rattling of the sashes.
Having thus described. our invention, we claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with two sliding'sashes,
and a stile and bead having slots arranged and adapted to register as shown and described, of the latch pivoted on the top of the lower sash, a stud fixed in the latter, and a spring concealed in a transverse recess in the under side of said latch and engaging said stud, whereby the latch is normally pressed inward to lock the sashes, as shown and described.
EMANUEL ENSMINGER. HENRY S. ENSMINGER.
