barren JOfiEEH SZALAY, OF VIGKSIB'URG, MISSISSIPJPI.
WIN-DOW LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent; Patgntigd J 1 25 1922 Application filed March 14, 1921. Serial No. 452,105.
Be it known that I, JosnrH SZALAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nindow Latches, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a Window latch, the principal object of the invention being to provide automatic means for locking the sash in closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hand operated member for unlock ng the parts from the interior of the building.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanymg drawmgs and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detall, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the window showing my invention in use.
Figure 2 is a front view of the movable part of the attachment.
Figure 3 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 2.
Figures t and 5 are views of the notched member or hand operated member.
Figures 6 and 7 are views of the carrying member.
Figure 8 is a View of the stud.
In these views 1 indicates the sash and 2 the window frame. A stud 3 is secured to one of these parts, the drawing showing it connected with the frame, said stud having a base plate 4 which is adapted to be secured to the supporting part. The other member is indicated generally at 5 and is secured to the sash. This member consists of the plate 6 which is screwed to the sashand has the offset end 7 which has its extremity rolled over to provide the eye 8. This ofiset part is recessed as at 9. The member 5 also includes the movable plate 10 which carries the pivot pin 11 with which the eye 8 engages so that this plate 10 is pivotally at tached to the plate 6. The two plates extend at right angles to each other and one edge of one plate lies adjacent one edge of the otherplate. A spring 12 engages the pin 11 and this spring hasone end bent over as at 13 to engage a small hole 14 in plate 10 and its other end engages a notch 15 in plate 6. This spring tends to hold the two plates inengagement. The plate 10 also carries a pin 16 which is adapted to engage the offset part of plate 6 and limit the movement of plate 10. The lower edge of plate 10 has a keyhole shaped notch 17 therein for receiving the stud 3 and said plate 10 is also provided with an car 18 at its free end which acts as a finger hold. The parts are so arranged on the sash and frame that when the sash is being closed the stud 3 will be engaged by the beveled edge 19 formed on the free end of plate 10 and force said plate outwardly and just as the sash reaches the closed position the stud will come opposite the notch 17 whenspring 12 will swing plate 10 inwardly again thus causing the stud to engage the notch and so hold the sash in closed position. In order to open the sash again it will be necessary to swin plate 10 outwardly to free the stud. This is done by the finger engaging the car 18.
It will thus be seen that the window is locked automatically as soon as it reaches closed position. 7
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with in the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A sash lock comprising a stud on the frame, a plate on the sash, a second plate pivoted to the first plate and arranged at right angles thereto, an offset portion pro vided on said plate and having a recess first mentioned plate, a pin carried by the movable plate to engage the olfset portion 01 the first mentioned portion of the first mentioned plate for limiting the movement of the movable plate, the pivoted plate having a notch therein and beveled edge leading to the notch and a stud adapted to be secured to the opposite part of Which the plate is secured and arranged to engage the JOSEPH SZALAY.
