CUFF BUTTON OR CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
Application filed April 14, 1920. Serial No. 373,852.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR'J. CAPsrnAw, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff Buttons or Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a cuff holder, and more particularly to the class of cuff buttons or clasps.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein a shirt cuff at its adjacent edges, when said cuff is folded about the wrist of a user can be engaged and clasped together so as to retain the the cuff in the sleeve of a coat or outer garment, without possibility of it becoming loose or separating at its adjacent edges and at'the same time holding the cuff properly shaped in wearingposition.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein the body thereof is substantially of U- shape, so that it can he slipped over the adjacent edges of a cuff and this body carries male and female snap fasteners, the male fastener being placed through the button holes in the cuff and detachably engaged withthe female fastener so that the body will embrace the adjacent edges of the cuff when folded about the wrist of a wearer and be retained properly shaped while worn, without the possibility of the accidental opening of the cuff, or the undue separation of the edges adjacent thereto of the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in form, so as to render the same extremely simple, desirable, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, capable of being readily applied and removed to and from a cuff and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fra mentary elevation of cufi' showing the cuff button or clasp constructed in accordance with the invention applied.
Fig. 2 isa sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cuff button or clasp showing the same flattened prior to the shaping thereof.
Fig. 4: is an edge View of the cuff button or clasp showing the male member of the fastener in released position, a portion of the body of said button or clasp being in sections.
Fig. 5 isan enlarged plan view of the female member of the fastener.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the cuff button or clasp is constructed from a single piece of relatively light metal of the required length or width and is made with a substantially U-shaped body 5, bent from the flat blank A shown in Fig. 3 on the fold lines 13 transversely thereof, in spaced relation to each other intermediate the ends of said blank A.
The body 5 at opposite ends has formed centrally thereof, extensions 6, provided with substantially circular-shaped or button like heads 7, and in one of these heads is slidably fitted a shank or stub link 8, constituting the male member of a snap fastener, the outer end of the shank or link being formed with a knob or finger engaging portion 9, while the inner end is provided with a latching tip or nib, 10 for detachable engagement with the female member of the snap fastener hereinafter described.
The other head 7 has formed thereon the female member in the form of a socketed spring snap device 11, with which is adapted to detachably engage the tip or nib 10 of the movable shan'k or link 9 forming the male member of the sna fastener, when the cuff button or clasp is mounted on and en-. gaged with a cuff C in a manner presently described.
In the use of the cuff button or clasp, the movable or stub link 9, is released from the socketed spring snap female member 11, on one of the heads 7 and is pulled outwardly through the other head 7, of the extension 6 on the body 5, and thereafter the latter is placed over the ed es adjacent each other of the cuff C so that t e body Will straddle said edges as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the edges being received Within the body 5, and the heads 7 Will be located at the button holes 12 in the cuff C and thereafter the shank or link 9 is forced inwardly through the button holes 12, to have the tip or nib 10 engage in the female snap member 11, on the opposite head 7 and in this manner the cuff button or clasp is fas- 1 tened to the cuff C and the latter is retained cient space to conveniently accommodatethe edges adjacent each other of the cufi When the button or clasp, is mounted thereon;
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of use of-the hereto.
snap fastener male member slidable through 7 one of the heads, and a snap fastener female member on the other head and detachably engaged'by the male member.
2. An article of the character described, comprising a substantially U-shaped body, having extensions provided With heads, a snap fastener male member slidable through one of the heads, a snap fastener female member on the other head and detachably engaged by the male member, and a finger engaging portion at the outer end of the male member. I
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature ARTHUR, J. OAPSTRAW.
