W. BRETSNYDER. COLLAR BUTTONER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. s, 1910.
1,008,238, Patented Nov. 7, 1911 VIIIIIIll/{IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII/lll I I '1 TNESSES:
IN VENTOR WILLIAM BRETSNYDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GOLLAR-BUTTONER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1911.
Application filed March 9, 1910. Serial No. 548,204.
To all whom itvnay concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM Bnnrsnrnnn,
- a citizen of the United States of America,
and a -residcnt of Chicago, in the county of Ctlok and State of llhnois, have "vented certainnew and useful Improvements in Col- ,lar-Buttoners, of which the following is a specification.
; gTlllS invention relates to an appliance for conveniently buttoning' shirt collars and the like in place uponfshirt bands, and has for its object to provide a simple and efiicient structural formation of the buttoner by which case and certainty of operation is insi1red,,and which is adapted to press the collar "tabs into place against the shirt band as a final. result of the buttoning operation and with a view to prevent accidental un buttoning on the removal of the appliance all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of using the present appliance. Fig.2, is .1 horizontal sectional elevation through the shirt band and collar, and with the appliance in its final position previous to removal.
Fig. 3, is a. front elevation of the appliance. '1
Fig. 4, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5, is a rearielevati'o'n of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the seve :11 views.
1 Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the body or shank of the present buttoner preferably formed of sheet metal and hav ing a. curved or segmental ing to a point at one end, the purpose being to provide a body or shank which is capable of convenient and easy manipulation with turn-down collars, the turn down [laps of which materially interfere with the ordinary straight shank buttoners, and in some cases entirely prevent the practical Working of the same.
2 are a pair of jaws arranged in separated relation atone end of the body or shank l aforesaid, and projecting laterally as shown to provide an approximately spherical cavity for receiving the head 3 of a collar button to have holding engagement therewith during the various movements of the appliance in buttoning operation. In the present im provement said jaws are curved toward each other and leave a gap of less width than the diameter of the shank of a collar button so that some force ill be required in engaging the ans 2 over the head portion of the collar shape and taperbutton, and in consequence the appliance will hold more surely to the collar button during the buttoning operation.- As so constructed the pair of jaws 2 are separated by a centrally located circular opening in the shank where the same joins the jaws 2 and in an oblique plane to the shank,' as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, and in the pres ent improvement an end of said opening is adapted to provide an abutment for the buttoner against the stem of a collar button.
\ In the preferred form of the presentinvention the shank 1 will be of a curved or view to attain maximum strength with a minimum degree of 11 htness, and the curved margins of the SlltlIlC Wlll merge into the stiffen the same.
4 are one or more longitudinal slits in the end of the shank which carries'the jaws 2. Said slitzor slits'are adapted to impart resiliency to said jaws so that they will yieldingly bend-upon and hold the head of the collar button during the but-toning operation, and permit of a ready disengagement of the appliance after such operation.
are side extensions on the shanks 1, and preferably formed as part of the curved side adjacent relation to the jaws 2, and are adapted in the final movement of the but toner to press against the outer collar tab and force the same back into place.
In a practical use of the present appliance, the res1lient jaws 2 are first engaged over the head '3 of the collar button to aiford uni- The pointed free end of the curved shankis then passed through. a buttonhole of the col lar and grasped by the fingers of the operator for further movements of the same to cause the collar tab containing the button hole to slip along the curved shanli aforesaid and over the head of the collar button into position. In such last mentioned step the curved or segmental shape of the shank in connection with the described relation of the ing the described results with ease and certainty. 4
Having 'thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*: i
A collar buttoner comprising an elongated shank having a cup formation at one end to arched form transversely as shown, with a' jaws 2 aforesaid to additionally brace andversal pivotal movement to' the appliance.
resilient jaws is a material factor in attaine.
margins of the same. Said extensions are in 'I'ECBiVG the head of the button; said end lmvin a. central circular opening in a plane 0b ique to the shank, and the cup being formed by a pair of spring jaws merging into the shank and arranged in a plane zit right angles to the plane of the shank, said jaws being adapted to spring over the stem of a collar button for holding engagement therewith, the slmnk-encl of the aforesaid circular opening providing an abutment for 10 the buttoner against said stem in the buttonin operation, substmitially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 7th day of March, 1910.
