To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JosnPH J. AROATE and TALMAN V. FOWLER, citizens of the United States, residents, respectively, at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, and at Port Richmond, county of Richmond, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Securing Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a device for securing the ends of a necktie, particularly of the four-in-hand type, to the shirt of a wearer so that they will not be displaced by the wind or hang away from the wearer when he bends over.

The devices commonly employed for this purpose consist of clamps having spring pressed jaws between which one edge of the end portion of the tie and the edge of the front opening of the shirt are gripped. As

A, the devices are usually used when vests are r not worn they are visible and must be given an ornamental appearance and be well finished. The edges of the jaws are usually roughened to provide a good grip and this frequently results in wearing the edge of a tie and perhaps even the edge of the shirt. Devices of this kind, are open to the further objection that when used with ties having relatively wide ends, they tend to displace the ties to one side of their proper positions when they are placed over the edges of the ties and the edges of the front openings in the shirts.

Other devices have been proposed or are in use which include as parts of their structure pins which pierce the tie. Such devices are open to the objection that the pins wear the tie and are liable to prick the fingers when being adjusted.

This invention has for an object, the production of a necktie securing device which shall be of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to hold both of the free ends of a tie in proper position without giving them a sidewlse displacement and without the use of parts which tend to wear the material of the tie and the shirt or injure the fingers. The device when in place is held beneath the tie so I that there is not the same necessity for giving it an ornamental appearance as in the case of devices which are visible when being worn, and thereby the construction of the device is simplified and it may be manufactured of cheaper material.

In accordance with the invention, the device consists of a pair of members detachably' connected to each other, such as those constituting a snap fastener or the like. One of the members is permanently attached to the inner surface of the wider end of the tie, while the co-operating member is permanently attached to a clip adapted to be placed over one edge of the narrower end portion of the tie, and also over one of the edges of the front opening of the shirt. It is intended that the clip portion of the device shall be removed while the tie is being tied in order not to interfere with this operation. After this operation has been performed, the part of the fastener connected to the clip is attached to the part of the fastener connected to the tie and the clip is adjusted over one edge of the other end portion of the tie and an edge of the front opening of the shirt.

Since the devices are of simple and inexpensive construction, they may be furnished with the ties, in which case a part of the fastener will be permanently attached to the tie when the latter is made, or the devices may be purchased separately in which case they will. be so constructed that the portion which is adapted to be permanently attached t0 the tie may be attached by the purchaser to any desired tie, and by providing one of these parts for each of several ties, a single clip provided with a corre sponding co-operating part may be used.

The particular nature of the invention as well as other objections and advantages thereof, will appear more clearly from a description of certain preferred embodiments as shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure '1 is a general view of the device in place,

Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view along the line 2-2 of Figure 1,

Figure 3 is a plan view of the clip portion of the device,

Figure 4 is an end view of the same showing the part adapted to co-operate therewith,

Figures 5 and 6 show a part of a device adapted to be attached to a tie by the purchaser.

In the drawings 1 represents a necktie of the usual four-in-hand type, tied in lace under a collar 2 and fastened to the e go 3 of the front opening of a shirt 4 by the device of the invention. As is customary in ties of this style, one of the ends 5 is somewhat wider than the end 6 and is adapted to lie in front of and conceal the latter when the tie is in place as shown in Figure 1.

Referring particularly to Figures 2, 3 and 4, the device comprises a snap fastener of any suitable construction, one of the cooperatn parts 7 of which is fastened to the inner p y 9 of the wider end 5 of the tie, while the other part 8 is fastened to the tongue 10 of a clip 11. As shown most clearly in Figures 2 and 3, this clip may be formed by cutting the tongue 10 out of the central portion of a suitable blank leaving it integral with the blank at one end and then bending the tongue away from the plane of the blank as shown most clearly in the side view of Figure 2. The free end of the tongue 10 will be bent a sufiicient distance from the plane of the blank out of which the clip is formed to receive the edge 3 of the. front opening of the shirt and the narrower end 6 of the tie as shown most clearly in Figure 2.

While the snap fastener portion of the tie may be of any suitable construction, it is shown herein of the ty in which each of the co-operating parts and 8 is composed of a pair of members which when pressed together permanently fasten between them the material to which the part of the snap fastener is to be attached. As is customa in snap fasteners of this construction, eac of these arts consists of a cup shaped member 12 within which the end of a stud 13 is expanded to permanently hold between these parts, the ply 9, in the case of the part 7 of the sna fastener, or the tongue 10 in the case 0 the part 8 of the fastener, as shown most clearl in Figures 2 and 4.

In the form of evice shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4, .it is intended that the part 7 shall be permanently attached to the 1y 9 when the tie is made. This may be one by the simple operation of pressing the members 12 and 13 together with the material of the tie between them, so that the cost of applying the device to the tie adds but little to the cost of the finished article. With each tie having the part 7 of the device permanently adjusted, the clip portion of the device will be attached to the portion carried by the tie by snapping the member 8 into the member 7. The clip will then be sprung over one edge of the narrower or concealed end 6 of the tie and over the edge 3 of the front opening of the shirt. The part 7 of the device will be attached to the wider or visible end 5 of the tie approximately midway between its edges so that when the tie is fastened to the edge 3 of the shirt by means of the device, the tie will occupy its proper position and not be displaced to one side, as is the case when fastening devices of the usual construction are employed, in which one edge of the wider end of the tie. lies along the edge 3 of the shirt thus causing sidewise displacement of the tie, particularly in case this part beof considerable width.

In the form of device shown in Figures 2, 3, and 4, it is intended .that the part 7 of the snap fastener shall be attached to the tie when the latter is manufactured, but in some cases, it may be desirable to provide an arrangement in which this part of the device may be subsequently attached, as by a purchaser. To provide for such a condition the form of device shown in Figures 5 and 6 may be employed. In this arrangement the part 7 is, as in the case of Figure 4, made up of a cup like member 12 and stud 13 adapted to be pressed into the former, but the stud is provided with a number of prongs 14 which may be bent up and pressed through the material 9 of the tie and then bent over with the material lying between them and the member 12 as shown most clearly in Figure 5. It will be understood that a clip provided with a part 8 will be used in conjunction with the part 7 of Figures 5 and 6, for the purpose of fastenin the tie to the shirt in the manner describe above.

The form of snap fastener shown herein is of particular advantage as it may be quickly applied to the tie and to the tongue of the clip by simple operations, but it will be understood that other forms of snap fasteners may be used, such for instance as one in which one of its co-operating parts is adapted to be sewed to the tie.

It will be seen that the invention provides a necktie securing device of simple and inexpensive. construction adapted to hold both of the free ends of a tie securely in place on the edge of ,a front opening of a shirt without displacing the tie from its proper position, and also without being visible when in place. The dan er of wearing the material of the tie is avoided and the appearance of the tie is not marred, as it would be by the use of devices attached to one of its edges and which may not hold the tie in proper position.

While certain preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms and that various changes in its details of construction may be made without departing from the principle thereof as defined in the'appended claims.

1. A securing device for a necktie comprising av pair of members detachably connected t'Q- achother, one of said members being attached to the necktie and a clip to which the other member is attached and which is adapted to be placed over an edge of the front opening of a shirt.

2. A securing device for a necktie com prising a clip adapted to be placed over an edge of the front opening of a shirt, and a pair of members adapted to be pressed into engagement with each other, one of said members being attached to the necktie and the other to the clip.

3. A device for securing the ends of a necktie to the shirt of a wearer comprising a clip adapted to be placed over an edge of the front opening of the shirt and a snap fastener comprising a part attached to the clip and a part attached to one of the ends of the necktie.

4. A device for securing the ends of a necktie to the shirt of a wearer comprising a cli adapted to be placed over an edge of the fiont opening of the shirt and an edge of the concealed end of the necktie, and a pair of members detachably connected to each other, one of said members being attached to the inner side of the visible end of the necktie and the other to the clip.

5. A device for securing the ends of a necktie to the shirt of a wearer comprising a clip adapted to be placed over an edge of the front opening of the shirt and a snap fastener comprising a part attached to the clip and a part attached to one of the ends of the necktie substantially midway between its edge.

6. A securing device for a necktie comprising a clip consisting of a substantially flat portion and a tongue formed integrally therewith and bent out of the plane of the flat portion, and a pair of members detachably connected to each other, one of said members being attached to the free end of the tongue and the other to one of the ends of the necktie.

7. A device for securing the ends of a necktie to the shirt of a wearer comprising a cli adapted to be placed over an edge of the Front opening of the shirt and a snap fastener comprising a part attached to the clip and a part provided with members by which it may be permanently fastened to one of the ends of the necktie.
