To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CECIL E. LL YD, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pensacola, in the county of Escambia and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustably-Engaging Supports, of which the following is a specification. 1
My present invention relates generally to adjustably engaging supports capable ofuse either as ironing tables, cot beds, and the like, and particularly to an arrangement of that as the height of such portions from a floor or roadway so as to adapt the arrangement to an interchange of uses, such asfor instance those above mentioned.
A s above stated my invention resides particularly in novel connections and results in enabling the shifting of the fulcrum between the frame and the body member or board, and proposes connections which bring about such shifting movement in a simple, ready and effective manner such as to work in opposition to the shiftable fulcrum-forming means or connections when the support is in engaged position for the purpose of increasing its stability in use.

:Referringnow to these figures and particularly to Fig. 1, my invention proposes an ad ustably engaging support, here illus .trated as an ironing table, and including a body member or board 10 which. in the inactive position extends between and in flatwise relation with, the side rails 11 of a; frame the opposite ends of which are entirely free, these side rails bein connected by cross braces 12 and being preferably beveled at one end as at 13, for engagement with the floor or ground. The opposite ends of these side rails have lower angular engaging surfaces 14, adjacent to which their upper faces or edges support transversely alined bearing plates 15 for the offset eX- tensions 16 of a crank hanger 17. The intermediate bar of this hanger is journaled in bearing brackets 18 transversely alined upon the lower face of the body member or board 10 adjacent to one end and at this end it will be noted by particular reference to Figs. i and 5, that the upper portion of the board is cut away adjacent to its extremity to form a reduced support-engaging portion which in action opposes the downwardly facing engaging surfaces 14 of the side rails 11 of the frame. It is obvious that by means of the crank hanger 18 I form a shiftable fulcrum for the movement of the body member or board 10 with respect to its frame so that the effective engaging space between its reduced end and the engaging surfaces 14 of the frame side rails may be varied to a considerable extent and still maintain these parts in approximately parallel relation. In this way, I provide for regulation or compensation as to table tops, engaged between the opposing portions of the body member and its frame, of varying thicknesses.
In addition to the foregoing, a second crank connection is provided between the body member or board 10 and its frame, this second crank being indicated at 19 with its central bar journaledin bearing brackets 20 transversely alined on the lower face of the board and with its oifset extensions journaled in bearing brackets 21 transversely alined upon the lower edges of the side rails 11. Thus the two crank connections between i 7 7, it will be noted that one of the offset exthe body member and its frame are spaced longitudinally of the latter and will be noted that the offset of the crank 19 is considerably less than that of the crank 17, sov
that in the clamped position shown for instance in either Figs. d, 5 1 and 2, the two points of support work against one another as between the board and its frame whereby to cooperate with the clamping portions of the board and frame in engagement with the table or other part in effectively holding the board in outstanding horizontal position.
It is equally obvious that, by virtue of the crank 19, which may be turned up or down, the board and frame as provided .by myinvention may be adjusted to higher low. tables' andthat the same construction may be adapted as a low down support for instance in the nature of a cot bed for use with antomobiles as seen in Fig.2 in engagement with the side edge of the running board. In this latter construction the board is illdicated at 10 and may if desired, be in hinged sectionsfoldableone upon the other upon-the hinges21. The side rails ll of the franie'in this form may also be in hinged sectionsfolda-ble upon hinges 22 so that the appliance as'a whole in folded position may be readily carried withinthe machine.

An appliance of the character described comprising a frame having angular'engag ing surfaces at one end, a body member or boardinthe frame having one 'end arranged to oppose the said engaging surfaces of the frame and coope ate therewith to form a support engaging clamp, and a pair of crank connections between the board and the frame spaced apart lengthwise of the board, one of which formsa movable fulcrum for the-board, as described.

An appliance of the character described comprising a frame having supportengag ing portions at one end, a body member or board in the frame having a reduced portion adjacent to the said engaging portions of the frame, a pair of cranks journaled in connection with the board and frame. at longitudinally spaced points, one of which cranks has a greater throw than the other and forms a movable fulcrum for the board, and a handle engaged with the other crank, for the purpose described.
