IMPROVEMENT IN TREADLES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,557, dated September 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, Jmvmzs V. PANGBURN and WILLIAM W. BARNETT, of Galesburg,
county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Driving Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention relates to the addition of a driving mechanism to the ordinary driving mechanism of sewing-machines; and the invention consists in extending the shaft 011 which the fly-wheel is carried out and beyond the main frame or case of the machine, and placing on the outer end thereof a crank or crank-wheel, which may be used by another party than the operator of the machine to turn or drive the operating devices; the object being to furnish means by which a second person may propel the machinery, to the relief of the operator, when desired.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the hanger shown at Fig. 1, seen from the right.
A A are the stands or supports of the table 0 is the fly or band-wheel of an ordinary sewing-ma- D is the treadle hung on the rockshaft E, and connected, by pitman Gr and crankpin H, with the fly-wheel G. I is the band for transmitting motion from the band-wheel G to the upper shaft J, as in the ordinary Singer plain and half-cased sewing-machine. K is a hanger, from the lower end of which a stud usually projects in said class of machines, forming a journal, on which the flywheel G rotates as abearing. In said class of machines the lower end of the hanger K is provided with two bearings, 70 k, in which the shaft L is carried, having the fly-wheel O on its inner end and the crank or crank-wheel M on its outer end. In all that class of sewing-machines in which the fly-wheel O is hung on a shaft either in bearings, in hangers, or in bearings in the frame or standards, our invention simply contemplates extending the shaft carrying said wheel out and beyond the main frame, and attaching thereto a crank-wheel by which a second person may operate the machine to the relief of the ordinary operator, or for other purposes.
The operation of our invention in all classes of machines is deemed obvious almost without description. The machine can be operated in the usual manner with the treadle D, or, when the operator desires it, from any cause, another person may propel the machinery by the crank M.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The crank-wheel M, when combined and arranged to operate with the fly-wheel (l and treadle D of a sewing-machine, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
