UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE,
HEINRICH KAMPRA'IH, OF CELLE, PRUSSIA, GERMANY. A,
TREADLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,825, dated March 14, 1882.
Applicationdfileil December 21, 1981. (No model.)
To all whom fit may concern Beit known that I, HEINRICH KAMPRATH, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Celle, Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Treadles for Sewing and other Machines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improved treadle or driving mechanism, the object of which is to greatly facilitate the action'ot driving sewingmachines and other apparatuses by foot; the anklesorjoints of thefoot willnot longer undergo the fatigues which they suffer by continued work with the treadles actually in use. The said mechanism of my invention is shown in the drawings- Figure 1 being a front elevation; Fig. 0, a side elevation of the said device, which, in this case, is applied to a sewing-machine ot' any kind, though it may as well be used in combi nation with any other machine or apparatus which is able to be worked by foot.
A is the frame of the sewing-machine; B, the plate or table ofthe same; C, the ily-wheel and pulley; D, the frame of the swinging driving mechanism E, the connecting-rod.
The frame D of the swinging mechanism is conveniently arranged below the table B of the sewing-machine or apparatus, and it is made to swing upon tenons d and in hinges b. The side bars of the frame D are extended down to allow the foot of the operator to be easily placed upon a treadle or rest.
At the flywheel side ot' the machine the frame D is provided with an eye, e, or a hook or convenient means to attach the connectingrod E, the upper end ot' which is connected to the ily-Wheel C at c.
The operation is going on as follows: The operator puts his foot or both his feet upon the treadle or rest F and gets his legs into a swinging or dangling forward-afid-backward motion, the foot or feet resting idle, the legs only swinging in thejoints of the knee. The frame D thus swinging to and fro in a straight lille imparts a revolving motion to the ilywheel C through the connecting-rod E, and thus the machine is set at work with the least possible exertion of the legs.
What I claim, a-nd wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the swinging frame D, hinged at a point above the axis of the crank or ily wheel, and provided with the foot-rest D', the crank orV [ly wheel, and the pitman or connecting rod E, connecting the crank or ily wheel directly to the swinging frame at a point between its hinge and the foot-rest, substantially as described.
Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specitieation iu the presence of twol subscribin g witnesses.
i HEINRICH KAMPRATH. Witnesses:
WILLIAMs C. Fox, Joris. KEAGKE.
