UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
Jon J. sMITH, on EEAIIHEOET, KENTUCKY.
CHURN-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,964, dated January 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, J B J. SMITH, of Frankfort, in the county of Franklin and State of Kentucky, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Uhuru-Motors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
- clear, and exactdescription of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 is a Vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to churn-motors; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, ,which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In. the drawings hereto annexed, A represents an upright xed in a base, B, and carrying a longitudinal top or cross piece, C. The latter is provided at itsrear end with a slot, D, to accommodate the pitman E, which latter connects a crank, F, upon a shaft, G, journaled transversely upon the top piece, with the end of a treadle, H, suitably mounted upon the base. The shaft G carries at one end a ilywheel, I, and at the other end a disk, J.
The front end of the top piece, C, is provided with a horizontal slot, K, in which is mounted, upon a vertical pin or axle, a wheel or disk, L, provided with a laterally-extending arm, M.
N is a short arm or connecting-piece pivoted lto arm M, and connected by a hingejoint, O,
to a rod, P, the other end of which is pivoted upon the face of the disk J. The rotary motion of the latter islthus, it will be seen, converted into an oscillating motion, which is con` veyed to the horizontal wheel or disk L.
Disk L is provided upon diametrically opposite sides with horizontal or semi-annular grooves Q R, one of which is near the upper and the othernear the lower edge of the disk. At its rear end, or just between the rear termination of the grooves Q It, the disk is provided with a notch, S. in which are secured two hooks orbuttons, T T, which, by making the notch sufficiently large, are readily accessible.
U U are belts or bands provided with holes Application led December 16, 1880. (No model.)
or slots, by which they may be adjusted upon the hooks or buttons, from whence they pass around the sides of the disk, being adjusted in the grooves Q It and to the front end of the top piece, (l. The latter is provided with a suitable bearing for the vertical dasher-shaft V, which is provided with a drum, W, around which the belts U are wound in opposite directions, and to which they are permanently attached.
The d'asher X. may be of any suitableJ construction. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The mechanism, which is worked by foot-power, imparts to the dasher an oscillating motion, which is conceded to be very desirable. To remove the dasher, which it is necessary to do when the churn is to be placed in position or removed, it is only necessary to unbutton the belts U, which it is manifestly easy to do. The general construction of my improved churn-motor is simple and inexpensive, and it is easily operated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. As an improvement in churn-motors, the combination of the upright A, having crosspiece C, crank-shaft F G, pitman E, treadle H, wheel or disk J, horizontal disk L, having arm M, pivoted connecting-piece N, con nectin g-rod I?, and means for conveying motion from the disk L to the dasher, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination of the dashershaft V, having drum W, belts or bands U U, secured to said drum and wound in opposite directions around the same, horizontal disk L, having grooves Q R, notch S, and vhooks or buttons T T,and mechanism for imparting to the disk L an oscillating motion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in presence of' two witnesses.
JOB J. SMITH.
