IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE POWERS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,839, dated September 16, 1873; application led Y J une 28, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. COCHRAN, of Eufaula, in the county of Barbour and State of Alabama, have invented a nevir and Improved Sewing-Machine Power, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a sewing-machine mounted on the operator-s rocking-chair, and having its pitrnan connected to the wall or other stationary object, so that by rocking the chair the pitman gives rotary motion to the driving-Wheel of the machine. The sewing-machine table, divested of the stand ordinarily used, is mounted on the arms of the chair in front of the operator, and swings forward and backward in unison With him, so that no inconvenience in managing the Work arises from the rocking motion. The pitman is, by preference, attached to the stationary support on the horizontal plane of the crankshaft; but it may vary from it either Way to some extent Without material effect. The crank-shaft is arranged at the front of the chair and parallel with it.

A represents the rocking-chair, which may be of any approved construction, arrangement,
or form. B represents the sewing-machine, except the stand and treadle, which may also be of any kind. C is the connecting-rod or pitman, which, in this example, is connected to the Wall D. E is the balance-wheel of the machine, to which the pitman is connected. B y rocking the chair and swinging the machine forward and back in thel direction of the pitman, rotary motion is imparted'to it, so that, instead of being laborious, the operating of the machine is made a pleasant recreation.
It may in practice be found desirable to connect both sides of the chair with the wall by Wheels and connecting-rods, as indicated in Fig. 2, to prevent lateral or side strain', and it may also be desirable to x the rockers in grooves, or in any other way to prevent the chair from Working out of place laterally.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The mode of connecting the motor of a sewin g-niachine with the y-wheel on a rockingchair, having a pitman attached to the, crankpin and pivoted to some stationary object, as and for the purpose specified.
