STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application fiIedMay 3, 1918. Serial No. 232,307.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN ROGERS FLAN- NERY andETHAN Dorms, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh,
in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to means for connecting the staybolt with the boiler sheets, the ob ect of the invention being to provide simple and efiicient means whereby a staybolt can be easily and quickly tested without removing any of the parts from the boiler sheets.
lVith this and other objects in View, the inventioit consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a separate view of the insertible bearing ring.
-1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 an inner boiler sheet between which a double-headed staybolt 3 is located. The inner end of the body portion of the staybolt may be provided with a threaded shank at to receive a separate spherical or rounded head 5 having a tool slot 6 and this head. is mounted in a bearing sleeve 7 secured to the inner boiler sheet 2. The sleeve 7 is to closed by means of a removable cap 8 preferably having interlocking relation with the bearing sleeve 7.
The outer boiler sheet 1 is provided with a hole 9 having a threaded Wall to receive 45 a short sleeve or bushing 10,-the latter being formed internally with a sheet 11 and with segmental shoulders 12 having inner cam or bevel faces. A cap or closure 13 for the outer headed end 14 of the staybolt is passed throu h the sleeve 10 and has a shoulder 15 to ear against the seat 11 in said sleeve. The cap 13 is also provided with segmental'shoulders 16 havin beveled Or cam outer faces to engage be ind the M segmental cam shoulders 12 of the. sleeve 1 0. and. thus secure said cap normally in place.
The cap l3provides a closure for the head 14 of the staybolt (which head may be integral with the body of the bolt) and 0 its internal configuration is such as to pro vide a suitable clearance space 17 for the head at the outer end of the bolt. The cap 13 is threaded internally at its inner end portion to receive an externally threaded ring or bushing 18 having a curved face 19 which acts as a bearing for the head 14 of the bolt, and a portion of the inner wall of this ring is beveled or made flaring as ]indicated at 20 to permit play of the stayolt.
For the purpose of permitting application of a wrench to the cap 13, the latter is made with an angular head 21. By turning the cap 13 until the segmental shoulders 16 shall have been moved out of line with the segmental shoulders 12 of the sleeve 10, said cap will be unlocked and then, with the use of a suitable tool, the operator may attempt to pry it from the sleeve 10. If the cap and bolt refuse to yield to such prying operation, this fact will denote that the bolt is whole and the operator may at once turn the cap to again lock it in place in the sleeve 10.
I11 order to facilitate the insertion of the bearing ring or bushing 18, the latter may be made with a portion 23 adapted to receive a wrench.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a sleeve adaptable for connection with a boiler sheet, of a cap or closure to receive the head of a staybolt, a removable ring within the inner end of said cap and constituting a bearing for the head of the staybolt, and interlock ing means between said cap and sleeve.
2. The combination with a sleeve adaptable for connection with a boiler sheet and having a shoulder therein, said sleeve also provided with segmental cam shoulders, of a closure for the head of a staybolt, entering said sleeve and having a shoulder to seat against the shoulder in the sleeve, said closure also provided with segmental cam shoulders to cooperate with the cam shoulders of the sleeve, and a removable bearmg ring inserted into the inner end of said closure and constituting a bearing for the head of the staybolt.
' *3. flhe con'ibination' Withinner-and enter boiler eheets-and=a stayb'olt having heads at both ends, means connecting the head at the inner end of the staybolt With the inner boiler sheet, of a closure for the head at the outerend of the staybolt, meansmfiordi'ng interlocking connection between said 'cl0- sure and the outer boiler sheet, and a ring inserted 1'11tO said closureand 'afioi'dmg 1 :1
bearing for thehea d at the outer end of the staybolt.
I'n testimony whereofwve have signed this specification in the *presen'ce of two'- sub- 15 scribing witnesses.
