Be it known that I, GEORGE P. VIGGIN- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Sheet I-Iolders or F iles, of which the following is a specification.

rIhis invention rela-tes to improvements in loose sheet holders or files.

The main objects of this invention are:

First, to provide an improved loose sheet holder and iiling device which permits the free removal of the sheets for the making of records thereon and also constitute an effective file for the sheets.

Second, to provide an improved loose sheet holder and filing device having these advantages which is very convenient to use, of large capacity and simple and economical in structure.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanaying drawing, forming a part of this specication, in which:

Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a cabinet having a series of compartments 2' adapted to receive my improved file or sheet holder units.

My improved iile or sheet `holder units consists of a pair of holder members, designated generally by the numerals 3 and t, and comprising side walls 5, rear walls 6, and end walls 7. These holder members are secured together at the rear by the hinges 8 disposed on the edges of the rear walls so that the holder members may be closed into a box-like file, as shown in Fig. II, or swung to an opposed oppositely inclined position, as shown in Fig. IV, so that the sheets 9 may be disposed therein and transferred from one holder member to the other.

Vhen the file is closed the sheets 9 are secured by the binding post 10 which is arranged through an opening 11 in one holder member and engaged in a socket 12 in the other. The post is retained and the sheets clamped in place by means of the clamping plate 13 which is perforated at 14 to receive the post and provided with a spring clutch 15, the clutch spring being riveted at 16 to the plate andhaving a slot 17 engaging the post. The clutch is released by lifting its slotted end away from the post. The sheets 9 have a plurality of holes 18 and a plurality of notches 19 at their binding edge. The holes and notches are uniformly spaced so that the sheets may be arranged in an alined body with their notches engaged with the guide ribs -20 secured intermediate the -ends of the rear walls 6, or arranged in an offset relation with the notches engaging the guide rib, there being holes in alinement in either position of the sheets so that the post may be introduced with the sheets all alined or with partk offset, the holder members being of such length as to permit the offsetting of sheets, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. V.

I preferably provide adjustable supporting plates 21 for the sheets, the plates being hinged at 22 to the rear walls of the holder members. The outer ends of the plates are supported by the toothed catches or racks 23 pivoted at 211 on the plates and adapted to engage pins 25 on. the holders.

The file units are held in their open position by means of links 27 Which are pivoted at 28 to the file holder members. To support the iile units in convenient position for use I provide a rack 29 having opposed V-shaped holders 30 adapted to receive. the holder members, see Fig. IV. The rack is supported on legs 31 so that it may be positioned at the side of the posting machine operator, or as may be desired.

In the modification shown in Fig. VII the holders 30 are omitted, a cross bar 32 being positioned to support the units, as shown in Fig. VII.

Vith this arrangement of parts the file units are arranged in the cabinet when not in use and support the sheets on their sides. When it is desired to refer to or make records upon the sheets the file is taken from the cabinet, opened and placed in the rack in which position the sheets may be manipulated and shifted from one holder to the other as desired. The back plates may be adjusted to bring the sheets at the proper angle to the operator for convenience in manipulation or to facilitate fingering.

By providing means permitting offsetting of the sheets selected sheets may be grouped to indicate that- Work has been performed thereon or otherwise, as may be desired. The guide ribs effectively aline the sheets in both positions and so that the post may be introduced. lVith the post in place the files may be handled Without danger of losing or disarranging the sheets.

I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various modifications in structural. details which I contemplate or which might be desirable in adapting my improvements, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as circumstances or the case may dictate.

Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as neiv and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. In a structure of the class described, the combination of loose sheets having notches and perforations at their inner edges, a pair of holder members each comprising side, end and rear Walls, said members hinged at the rear so that when closed they constitute a box-like file for the sheets and when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders permitting the transfer of the sheets from one to the other, a guide rib on the rear Wall of one of said holder members with which notches of the sheets may be engaged to facilitate alining them, a removable binding` post adapted to be inserted through alined holes of said sheets, a rack adapted to support a file in its open position.

9. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of members each comprising side, end and rear Walls, said members hinged at the rear so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders, permitting the transfer of the sheets from one to the other and When closed a box-like i'ile for the sheets, a rack adapted to support a file in open position.

3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of members each comprising side, end and rear Walls, said members hinged so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed holders adapted to receive sheets and permit their transfer from one to the other and when closed a file for the sheets, a rack adapted to support a file in its open position.

5. In a structure of the class described, the combination of loose sheets having notches and perforations at their inner edges, ay pair of members each comprising side, end and rear walls., said members hinged at the rear so that when ojened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders adapted to receive sheets and permit the transfer of the sheets from one holder to the other and When closed a box-like file for the sheets,

one of said holder members being provided with a post opening and the other with an opposed post socket adapted to receive a post.` a guide rib on the rear Wall of the holder member provided with the post opening with Which notches of the sheets may be engaged to facilitate alining them, said holder members being of such length that the sheets may be arranged therein in an alined body or with a part of the sheets in an offset relation and With holes thereof alined with said post opening, a post adapted to be removably disposed through said post opening and the alined holes of the sheets and When the members are closed engaged With-said socket in the other holder member, and a retaining member disposed over the sheets and adjustably engaged With said post so that the post is retained and the sheets clamped in position thereby.

6. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of members each comprising side, end and rear Walls, said members hinged so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed holders adapted to receive sheets and permit their transfer from one to the other, the rear Walls constituting supports for the adjacent edges of said sheets, and When closed a box-like file for the sheets, sheet binding means releasably secured in said members, and means for supporting the tile in its open position.

7. In a structure of the class described, the combination of loose sheets having notches and perforations at their inner edges, a pair of members hinged at the rear so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders adapted to receive sheets and permit the transfer of the sheets from one holder to the other and when closed a ile for the sheets, a guide means on one of the holder members with which notches of the sheets may be engaged, to facilitate alining them, said holder members being of such length that the sheets may be arranged therein in an alined body or with a part of the sheets in an offset relation, and a post adapted to be removably disposed through alined holes of the sheets.

8. In a structure of the class described, the combination of loose sheets having notches at their inner edges, a pair of members hinged at the rear so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders adapted to receive sheets and permit the transfer of the. sheets from one holder to the other and when closed a tile for the sheets, and a guide means on one of the holder members with which notches of the sheets may be engaged to facilitate alining them, said holder' members being of such length that the sheets may be arranged therein in an alined body or with a part of the sheets in an offset rela-v tion.

9. In a structure of the class described, the combination of loose sheets having notches at their inner edges, a pair of members hinged at the rear so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders adapted to receive sheets and permit the transfer of the sheets from one holder to the other and when closed a tile for the sheets, and a guide means on one of the holder members with Which not-ches of the sheets may be engaged to facilitate alining them.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of sheets, a pair of members each comprising side, end and rear Walls, said members being hinged so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders permitting the transfer of the sheets from `one to the other and when closed a file for the sheets, binding means for said sheets, sheet supporting plates hinged at their ini ner ends for adjustment, means for adjustably supporting the outer .ends of said plates, and means for supportig .said holder members in their -ropen position.`

In a structure of the class described, the combination of sheets, a pair of members hinged so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders permitting the transfer of the sheets from one to the other and when closed a file for the sheets, binding means for said sheets, and plates hinged at their inner ends for adjustably supporting the sheets.

12. In a structure of the classdescribed, the combination of loose sheets, a pair of members hinged at the rear so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders adapted to receive sheets and permit their transfer from one holder to the other and when closed a tile for the sheets, a removable binding post, and a lguide means on one of the holder mem-bers With Which the sheets may be engaged to facilitate alining them to receive the post, said holder being of such length that the sheets may be arranged therein in an alined body or with a part of the sheets in an offset relation.

13. In a structure of the class described, the combination of loose sheets, a pair of members hinged at the rear so that When opened to an opposit-ely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders adapted to receive sheets and permit their transfer from one holder to the' other and When closed a file for the sheets, a removable binding post, and a guide means on one of the holder members with Which the sheets may be engaged to facilitate alining them to receive the post.

14, In a structure of the class described, the combination of loose sheets, a pair of members each comprising side, end and rear walls, said members being hinged so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders adapted to receive sheets and permit their transfer from one holder to the other and when closed a box-like tile, one of said holder members being provided with a post opening and the other with an opposed post socket adapted to receive a post, a post adapted to be removably disposed through said post opening and the sheets and when the members are closed engaged with said stoel-:et in the other iolder member, and a retaining member disposed over the sheets and adjustably engaged with said post so that the post is retained and the sheets clamped in position thereby.

15. ln a. structure of the class described, the combination oit a pair of members each comprising side, end and rear walls, the said rear walls being at right angles to said side walls and the said members being hinged at the rear so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of opposed sheet holders permitting the transfer of the sheets from one to the other and when closed a box-like le for the sheets, and sheet supporting plates hinged at their inner ends for adjustment within said members to vary the angle of the sheets relative to said rear walls.

16. The combination of sheets, a pair of members hinged so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair ot opposed sheet holders permitting the transfer ,of sheets from one to the other and when closed a ile for the sheets, sheet binding means comprising a post removable through one of said members, and a sheet clamping plate provided with post engaging means.

17. In a structure of the class described, the eomliiination of a pair of side members comprising side and rear walls extending at right angles to each other. said members being hinged to each other so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of sheet holders, the rear walls acting as supports for the adjacent edges of the sheets in the two members, and means for offsetting the outer edge of each sheet relative to the next lower sheet comprising sheet supporting plates hinged at their inner edges to said members, and means secured to their outer ends for adjusting said plates relative to said side walls.

18. ln a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of side members comprising side and rear walls extending at right angles to each other, said members being hinged to each .other so that when openen to an oppositelv inclined position they constitute a pair of sheet holders, the rear walls acting as supports for the adjacent edges et the sheets in the two members, and means for offsetting the outer edge of each sheet relative to the next lower sheet comprising sheet supporting plates hinged to said members, and means secured to their outer ends for adjusting said plates relative to said side walls.

19. ln a structure of the class described, the combination. of a. pair of side members comprising side and rear walls extending at right angles to each other, said members being hinged to each other so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of sheet holders, the rear walls acting as supports for the adjacent edges of the sheets in the two members, and means for osetting the outer edge of each sheet relative to the neXt lower sheet comprising sheet supporting plates hinged to said members, and means for adjusting said plates relative to said side walls.

20. ln a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of side members comprising side and. rear walls extending at right angles to each other, said members being hinged to each other so that when opened to an oppositely inclined position they constitute a pair of sheet holders, the rear walls acting as supports for the adjacent edges of the sheets in the two niembers, and means for oii'setting the outer edge oit each sheet relative to the next lower sheet.
