Description

Oct. 4, 1932. O w s g g I 1,881,304
BOOK COVER Filed May 1, 1929 Patented Get. 4, 1932 o'rro wissnnnansan, or HEMPSTEAD, new YORK; nrlsznvnnonrca WIESENDANGER ADMINISTRATRIX or slain or'ro wrnsnnnanenn, nsenasnn BOOK oovna Application filed May 1,
This invention relates to improvements in book covers, the object being to provide a book in which the checks or leaves are permanently secured together and detachably mounted between a pair of cover members whereby the stubs in case of a check book or the leaves in case of a book, can be detached as a unit and filed away and a new set of checks or leaves placed in the cover so that the cover members may be used over and over again.
Another object of my invention is to provide a book in which the cover members are so hinged to the member permanently connecting the checks or leaves, that the open ing of the front or top cover member will after a limited movement move the same in a vertical position so that the leaves will lie perfectly flat, regardless of the number of leaves turned.
Another object of my invention is to provide a book in which the means for permanently securing the leaves or checks together form the back edge of the book and serves as a means for holding the leaves in a flat position.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.
In the drawing,
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved book;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view, partly broken away, showing the several parts in their separated relation; and
Figure 4 is an end View showing the book open and the leaves lying in a flat position.
Referring now to the drawing, 1 represents a box-like leaf carrying member which as shown is U-shaped in cross section and in which are permanently fastened the stubs or leaves A by means of eyelets or rivets 2 and whereby the leaves or stubs are permanently held together so that when removed from the cover members, they may be retained as a unit as a permanent record.
Secured to the outer faces of the upper and 1929. Serial No. 359,699.
lower walls 3 and 4 of the box-like member are-two plates 5 and 6 which are of a length equal to the walls of the boX members but of a width slightly greater so that they extend a slight distance beyond the front edges of the walls 8 and 4 as shown in Figure 2 ofthe drawing. I i a Passing upwardly through-the plate 6 and through the box-like member 1 are tubular posts and 8 which are internally threaded and passing downward through the plate 5 and screwed into the posts are screws 9 and 10 which firmly, yet removably, secure the plates 5 and S te the outer faces of the boxlike member 1. p
The cover members 11 and 12 are ofla size slightly greater than that of the leaves and said cover members lie in a plane withthe plates 5 anol'6 -asclearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The cover members 11 and 12 adjacent their rear edges are each provided with the two hinge members 13 and 14, which are in the form of loops having their free edges pointed or sharpened so that they are rigidly clamped or forced into the upper and lower faces of the cover member and rigidly clamped thereto. These loop-shaped hinge members 13 and 14 extend a slight distance I beyond the rear edges 15 of the cover members and pass through slots 16 and 17 in the plates 5 and 6. These slots are of a width just slightly greater than the thickness of the metal of the loop hinge members 13 and 14, whereby said hinge members are free to move in the loop as the cover member 11 moves from the position shown in full lines to the position shown in dotted lines, F igure 2, where the cover member can not move further due to the binding of the hinge members against the wall of the slots 16 and 17.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the book in use, is laid fiat as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and the cover member 11 is swung from the position shown in full lines to the position shown in dotted lines, Figure 2. l/Vhenreaching this point, the hinge members bind against the walls of the slots 16 and 17 and a continued movement of the cover member locks the plate 5 thereto and the same is swung over, carrying with it the box-like member 1 until it reaches a vertical position with its rear wall resting flat upon the table or desk. During this movement the cover member 12 remains sta tionary due to its free hinge connection with the plate 6 except its inner end is slightly raised due to the swinging of the plate 6 from a horizontal to a vertical position. Thus it will be seen that the two cover members and the stubs and checks lie flat and will remain y in said position without pressure from the hand and when used as a ledger, the sheets on both sides will remain in a flat position no matter where the book is opened. What I claim is v A book comprising a box-shaped back member, leaves permanently secured therein, plates arranged against the u per and lower faces of said box-shaped bac: member and having portions extending forwardly therefrom provided with slots, separable pins extending through said plates and box-shaped member cover members, rigid loop-shaped hinge members passing through said slots and constructed to have an initial limited free movement therein and to finally lock therewith and swing the plates and boxshaped back member, the freeends of said loops embracing said cover 'members and having their free edges embedded in said cover members to rigidly connect said cover members to said loops.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alfix my signature.
'OTTO WIESENDANGER.
