Application tiled. march 2?, 191'?.
To all whom '5t may concern.'
Be it known that l., FERDiNAND D. Booriamo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rocky Ford, in the county of Utero and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful improvements in Bucket-Supporting Brackets, of which the following is a specitication.
'lhis invention relates to improvements in brackets, and more particularly to bucket lupporting brackets for attachment to laders.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, strong and etlicient bracket of this character, having a bucket holder so connected therewith as to provide for its being always arranged vertically, regardless of the angle at which the support to which'it is attached may be disposed. v
Another object is to provide a device of this character, `the bucket holder of which is adjustable to t buckets of diderent sizes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coinbination and. arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood 'that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.`
in the accompanying drawings:
Figure l represents a front elevation of a portion of a ladder with this improved bracket applied thereto,
Fig., 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the attachment detached,
lFig. 1 is a horizontal section taken on the line 1f-i of Fig. 1, and
F ig. 5 is a transverse vertical section through the bucket holder.
1n the embodiment illustrated, this iinproved bracket is shown attached to one side bar of a ladder lL, a portion only of said ladder' being shown. The bracket constituting this invention comprises a support engaging member in the form of a metal bar 1 having l..shaped arms 2 extending rearwardly from one side edge thereof at or near its opposite ends, said arms being made integral with said bar and having the short members 3 thereof positioned parallel with bar 1 to form in connection with said bar,
Patented lieb.. 5% Mula.,
serial no. rama-e.,
clamps between which the side bar of the ladder L, to which the device is to be attached, is disposed. 'llhe short member 3 of each l..shaped arm 2 has a threaded aperture therein to receive a set screw t between which and the bar l., the side bar of the ladder L is clamped as is shown clearly in Fig. 1. When so disposed, the rear face of bar 1 will lie flat against the outside edge of the side bar of the ladder, while the arms 2 will be arranged across the front face thereof as is shown clearly in Fig. 1.
An arm 5 extends laterally from the outer face of bar 1 preferably midway of the length thereof may be made integral therewith or iixed'thereto by any suita le means. rllhis arm 5 as illustrated is in the form of a bar, rectangular in cross section, having a cylindrical screw threaded free end 6 with a shoulder 7 at the base of said threaded eirtension. Braces 8 are connected with bar 1, and with the ,outer end of arm 5 as is shown clearly in Fig. 1, and adapt said arm to sup port heavy weights without danger of breakage or bending thereof. A thumb nut 9 is carried by the screw threaded extension 6 of arm 5, and a washer 10 is also carried by said extension, and between said washer and the shoulder 7 on the arm, is designed 'to be clamped a standard 11 which carries the support for the bucket or other object. rl`his standard 11 has an eye at one end through which the eXtension 6 of arm 5 passes and whereby said standard is loosely engaged with said extension to provide for its free turning thereon but may be clamped in adjusted position by nut 9.
A plate 12 is carried by the upper or free end of the standard 11 extending in a plane at right angles thereto on both sides thereof, and is designed to operate as a platform or support for a bucket carrying member 13. The 'standard 11 is also provided with a threaded opening 111 near said plate 12 for a purpose to be presently described.
rThe bucket holder is composed of two sections 15 and 16 here shown in the form of semicircular plates, each having an upstanding flange 17 around the peripheral edge thereof, the straight edges of said plates being arranged opposite to each other as isv shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 1 and are designed to abut when said sections are at the limit of their inmost position. vlhe plate 12 is secured to section 15 by any suitable means and is of auch a size-as to underlap section 16 and form a guide therefor when these two sections are moved toward or away from each other. A plate 18, here shown arcuate in form, is secured to the lower face or bottom of section 16 adjacent its periphery, and has depending therefrom an apertured lug or ear 19 designed to receive a screw bolt 20, which is loosely enga ed with said lug and held by means of a loc nut 21 carried by the screw bolt 20 and which cooperates with an enlarged head 22 formed on the outer end of said bolt, said head being preferably knurled to facilitate the actuation of the bolt. This screw bolt 20 also extends through the threaded aperture in the standard 11 and by the turning of said bolt in one direction or the other, the sections 15 and 16 of the bucket holder are moved toward or away from each other according to the direction in which said bolt is turned.
In the use of this improved bracket, which may be employed for supporting paint buckets or any other receptacle to which it may be adapted, the bracket proper is fastened to one side bar of the ladder. L in the manner above described, with the arm 5 projecting laterally outward therefrom at one side thereof, and when the ladder has been positioned at the desired angle, the bucket support is adjusted to dispose it horizontally by irst loosening nut 9 on the arm extenj sion 6 and positioning standard 11 vertically. 'Ihe nut 9 is then tightened up and the standard will be secure y held in this position.
The bucket holder may then be adjusted to receive the bucket, for the support of which it is intended by positioning the sections 15 and 16 toward or away from each other in the manner above described "and the apparatus is ready for use, it being understood that the flange 17 will prevent any lateral movement of the bucket after it has been positioned in the holder.
While this improved bracket has been shown and described in connection with a ladder, it is to be understood that it may be used in connection with any other support for which it is adapted.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily namens invention together with the device which I f now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim:-
l. In a bracket of the class described, a support engaging device havin a laterally extending fixed arm, a standar carried by said arm and adapted to be swung in a vertical plane, means for holding said standard in adjusted position, a plate carried by the free end of said standard, said standard having a threaded openin extending therethrough adjacent said p ate, a laterally expansible article holder mounted on said plate and comprising a fixed member secured to the plate and a movable member resting thereon and having a depending apertured ear, the aperture therein being threaded, and a screw operable through said threaded ear and the aperture in said standard whereby said movable member ma be adjusted toward or away from the ed member carried by said plate.
2. In a device of the class described, a bar having L-shaped members extending at one edge from opposite ends thereof to form support receiving seats between the short arms of said members and said bar, said members having means for detachably securing the support in said seats, an arm extending laterally at right angles fromsaid bar in a direction opposite to said L-shaped members and at a point midwaybetween them, said arm having its free end threaded and a shoulder at its base, braces connecting said bar and arm, a standard having an eye at one end for engagement with said threaded arm end, a nut for clamping said standard in adjusted position, and an article supporting platform carried by said standard.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND D. BOCHARI).
