` Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 19,1%.
Application filed November 15. 1915. Serial No. 61,500.
To @ZZ whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, AJOHN Lo'rira, a citizen of the United States, anda` resident of Demarest, in the county of Bergen and `State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Cigarette-Coin tainers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coi'itainers of the type which comprises two hinged lids and a holder located between them with means tor keeping the holder in 4a central position (equidistant"fromthe lids) when'the container is open. The object of my invention is toV provide'a verysimple and compact construction of the `above-indicated character, which can be manufactured at very low cost. f
Three specific embodiments of my invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, and the novel features will then be pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a'vertcal section showing one form oit my invention and taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2; the latter represents the container in the open position, looking down upon it; Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the container closed; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing another form of my invention substantially in section on the line 4-t of Fig. 5; Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5- of Fig. d; Fig. 6 is a detail bottom view of the holder shown in Figs. 4f and 5; and Fig. 7 is a partial vertical section illustrating still another form of my invention. For the salie of clearness the cigarettes which are shown in Figs. 1 to -t inclusive, haveJ been omitted from Fig. 5.
The container shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is suitable for use as a cigarette box, and is generally made of cardboard or similar material. This boX comprises the two lids A, B, hinged together at A, and one ot' them provided with a tiange B to fit into the other lid when the box is closed as in Fig. 3. Ot' course, I do not restrict myselt to this particular construction of the lids. Adjacent to the outer ends of the lids (meaning the ends farthest away from the hinge A), are secured the outer ends C Dl of connecting or supporting members C, D respectively, the inner ends of which are attached to the central holder; in the particular construction shown, the inner ends ot the members C, D will the membersC, D are secured to the bottom member E ot the holder. Hinges or pivotal l/ Joints are formed at C D ,p E, the cardboard bein0` areterabl i scored toV facilitate ,b 5 its bending along these lines. in addition to the bottoni E, the holder is represented as comprising ends F, an encircling band il,
and (when it is desired to lplace two rows of cigarettes in the holder) af partition li which may be glued to the ends F. The cigarettes J are inserted eiidwise between vthe partition Hand theband G, and rest on the bottom E. AThis bottom together with the ends F may be made in one piece with the connecting members C, D.
lVhen the box is int-lie closed position (Fig. 3), the members C, D are parallel or approximately so, and the entire holder with the cigarettes therein is virtually suspended by'meansof said members it" the boX is held vertical as in Fig. 3. its the box is opened, assume a converging or V-shaped position, and will keep the holder in a` central oositi'oii that is to sav.
equidistant from the lids A., D, or at least approximately so. The cigarettes are thus readily accessible and removable from the holder individually. It will be observed that said members are shorter than the distance between the hinges C or D at their outer ends and the hinge A connecting the pair of lids A, B. It will also be seen that the holder has no direct connection with the hinge A. Also, the connecting members may at all times remain within the lids, asv shown in Fig. 1, so as to have their edges well protected. That is to say, the connecting member C, having its inner end attached to the bottom E, will at all times remain within the lid A, or between the fianges of said lid, and similarv, the connecting member D will at all times remain within the lid B..
The two constructions illustrated by Figs. 4 to 7 are intended more particularly for cigarette cases made of metal. IThe lids n, o (held in the closed position by a catch of any usual or approved construction, not shown) are hinged together at o, and to their outer portions are secui'ed at c d in any suitable inaimer, as by hinges or pivots, the outer ends of connecting members o, l respectively, the inner ends of said members being secured to the holder, as by 'forming tongues or pins e on the bottom c et the holder, and coiling one end portion of each connecting member around such pin, the extremities of such coiled portions c* engaging the holder and tending to keep it always in a central position (Figs. 4t, 5, 6). The holder may be of any suitable construction, and if it is intended to contain two rows ot' cigarettes, as shown, itmay comprise a section U-shaped in cross section and another section of L-shaped section, to form the par! tition it and the coniining members g, which latter are preferably corrugated vertically as shown to form seats or pockets for the .individual cigarettes.
The construction shown in Fig. 7 diiiers from that of Figs. 4, 5, and 6 only by the fact that the'in'ner ends of the connecting members c, d are simply formed into eyes c to fit aroundthe. pins e, while separate coiled springs K are employed to perform the function of the coils ci, said springs bearing againstthe holder with one end and against the connecting member c or d with the other end. rlhe operation the same as with the other constructions described above. v t
While the containers shown in the drawings are intended for cigarettes, it will be obvious that by a suitable choice of dimensions the container may be adapted to hold other articles, such'as matches, cigars, etc.
Various modifications may be made with- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for out departing from the nature of my invention as set forth in the appended claims. The springs'K may be omitted it' desired. The springs K or 0*also operate to open the container.
-I-claim as my invention:
1. A container comprising two hinged lids, a continuous member whose Vends are secured to the respective lids at a distance from the lid-hinge, said member being provided with four Aparallel, hinges, two Aof them adjacent tothe respective lids `and the other two at thel central portion of said member and adjacent to Athe'lid hinge,.the portion of said member .between itstwo central hinges forming a holder bottom, and
Acomplementary holder parts secured to said bottom on Vthe side away from the lid hinge. Y 2. A container'comprising two hinged lids, a pair of members each havingits' outer Y* end pivoted, to one loi'f the lids atthe portion farthest from the lid hinge, the inner ends of said members being permanently` within the respective lids, whether the container .is open or closed, and a holderconnected'pivotally with said inner ends of themembersj and located entirely on that sidefof thensaidinner ends which is away from the lid hinge. Y
In testimony whereof, I havesigned this specification. i
