PAPER BOX.
Application nled May 13, 1922.
My invention relates to paper boxes par-- ticularly designed and adapted for the reception ot music rolls such as are used with player-pianos, although useful for other purposes as well. There a considerable number of such n'iusic roll boxes are kept for use at one place, as tor demonstrating purposes in a music store, or in a collection of such rolls in the home, they are usually stacked in a pile, with the ends -only of the bones in the interior of the pile exposed. lt is desirable and necessary to full enjoyment or a collection of music under such conditions that the boxes be so constructed that any selected roll may be withdrawn, leaving` the box which contained it in the pile.
The object of my invention is to provide a container or receptacle or" the drop front type consisting of an outer casing member open at the front end and an inner opentop sliding drawer member adapted to receive the music roll, so constructed and arranged as to permit withdrawal of the drawer only a sufficient distance to permit the front end to be depressed so that the roll can be removed from the box without disturbing the pile. lt is not only unobjectionable, but is a desirable feature of my improved box, that the drawer member cannot be removed, since in such case it is apt to be carried away from the pile, and a place to put it must be ound, and where more than one drawer and roller is thus handled they are liable to be interchanged'when they are replaced.
lilith the general purpose above indicated and incidental advantages in the way of simplicity and economy or" construction and Vadaptation toits intended use in view I have designed and invented the paper boar-d container illustrated in the accompanying drawings and which is hereinafter more fully described, and my invention resides in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of cooperating` parts ot the box, the essential elements thereof being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims in which l have donned my invention and distinguished it 'from the prior art so tar as known to me.
Figure l ot the acomuanying drawing is a longitudinal vertical section through the box; Fig. 2 is a perspective oi the front end of the box opened to receive the music roll; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of a Serial lilo. 560,543.
modified form ot box; and Fig. 4 is a perspective of `the front end of such modification opened as in Fig. 2.
The .same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures of the drawing.
'lhe outer member of my novel receptacle consists oi? a rectangular box or casing open at the front end, and in the present instance though not necessarily, at the rear end also. lThis buter member may conveniently be constructed oil an integral blank having a bottom section l, side sections 2 2, overlapping top sectionsl 3 and 3, and` a stop flange a, cut away at one end, separated by score lines and folded and with the top sections secured together so as to form a rectangular tube with an internal flange projecting` downwardly from thel inner top section near the adjacent upper corner of the tube and extending from the end which constitutes the front end of the boX over halt way toward the rear end.
The inner, sliding box member designed to receive the roll-consists of front and rear bottom sections marked 5 and 5a, respectively, connected along transverse hinge joint, inthe present instance a cloth hinge 6 being employed; divided sides, consisting et trent sections 7 and rear sections 7a, separated by the oblique Icut 8 and angular gap 9 illustrated; a trent wall l() which is preferably termed with a notch ll at its top edge to facilitate withdrawal of the inner .slide member from the outer casing member, and a rear end wall l2.
ln assen'ibling the lfboX the'. stop flange l may be bent parallel with the top sections et the casing member to permit passa-ge of the rear end et the sliding member trom trent to rear, the flange springing down inside the rear wall oi the sliding member as soon as such wall has cleared the flange and serving as a stop cooperating with the opposite ends of such sliding member. The stop permits withdrawal or the slide member to a point where the hinge line is in the plane of the liront edge of the casing, in which position the liront end ot the slide may be depressed to permit withdrawal of the music roll. l/Vhen the roll is replaced and the slide closed the stop prevents the slide from being pushed rearwardly out of the rear end ot the casing. The rear end wall l2 of the sliding member serves to support and brace the casing member so that a rear wall at the end of such casing is not required (see Fig. l), although it nia-jy. be provided tor additional strength and improved appearance if desired, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
lt will be noted that when the 'trent end or' the slide is depressed the rear portions ot the trent side sections 7 rotate about the hinge axis adjacent the sides 2 oft the casing but remain within the plane oi' the 'front ot such casing, so that they serve `as guides in facilitating a proper movement at the hinge joint, and in iowerinost position such portions bring up against the top of the casing, thus preventing excess movement and maintaining' the 'iront end ot the slide in tilted position. 'lhe angular portions of the rear sidewall sections /"tl which ie below the oblique cuts 8 serve te strengthen the adjacent portion of the bottom section 5 and prevent it 'troni capping upward as in seine instances there is a tendency for that part to do.
Lin lfig. il have shown a inodiiied torni ot my invention employing as means for preventing withdrawal of the inner bon inember a separate sheet metal stop l5 secured to t-he top cgt the casing, the casing, in the torni illustrated, having a top wall of single thickness and being provided with a rear wall i6 closing the end ot' such member. ln this inodiiication, also, the liront section 13 and rear section at eac-h side of the inner sliding member are separated on the arc of a circle concentric et the hinge axis and on the radius oi.t such arc in the meeting line between the bottoni section and the part-icular side, the curved rear ends oit the sections 13 thus serving as guides, but not as stops limiting the depression ot the Aliront of the slide member.
