APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 4. 1914.

COLUMBIA PLANOHRAPH coImi NNNNNNNNNNNN ATES QFFICE VICTOR NIVOIS, or :BROOKLYN, New YORK.
con'rAnvER. I
To'all whom it'may concern: V Be it known that I, VIo'roR NIvoIs,.asubject of the President ofFrance, residing at Improvements. in Containers,
Brooklyn, in the county of-King s and State of New York, haveinvented new and useful of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers, and
particularly to containers for'articles which are to be carried in the pocket.
While the invention is applicable to many different articles, I'have described it in the W following'specification as applied to a con- "tainer for cigarettes.
. A principal object ofithe mast is to produce a container which is'very simplein cally manufactured. Y
holds the articles such as cigarettes and preconstruction and which can be very economisents them in'an uprightposition if the container is opened, or laid'open upon a horizontal support such as a table.
One of the objects of the invention is to produce a container of this type having an improved formof holder which is very simple and economically manufactured, and
which holds the cigarettes in such a way as to .increase the efi'ective volumeof the container when closed. V I
A further object of the invention is to provide a" container which canbe readily produced and particularly which can be readily filled with cigarettes or other articles.
A further object of the invention is to providean arrangement for yieldingly re- .tainlng the cigarettes -or other articles in the holder. v
Further objects of the'invention will appear more clearly hereinafter. r
. The invention consists in the general combination of parts and those features and .details hereinafter described, all of which contribute to'produce an efiifcient container.
A preferred embodiment of my invention will'be particularly'described in the following specification, while the broad scope "of my invention will be pointed out in the appended claims. I
In the drawmgs:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a container embodying my invent qn and r pr ent ng the in en n at h Specification of Letters Patent."' PatenteflOctt-i 19 Application filed September 4. 1914. Serial No. 860,191. a r I plied toacigarette case. Fig. 2 is a vertical section'throughthe container illustrated in Fig; 3 is a perspective showing this 7 conta ner in its closed position. Fig. 4: is
aplan showing the preferred form of blank from which the holder of thecontainer may be readily formed. Fig. 51' is a longitudinal vertical section showing another --form of container for cigarettes embodying the invention. ,Figf6 is aperspective shoW-.
ingthis other form of container in its closedpositlo-n.
Referring more; particularly tothe parts,

formed integral with each other and are slightly dished so that when they are swung together on their-hinge connection at 12, their edges 18 meet continuously so as to inclosea spac'ein which the holder 14: is received. V This holder-I14: is preferably of box form and may be'most conveniently formed from a blank 15 of the form illustrated in Fig. 4. ,.The blank'15 is an elongated strip preferably formed with four score lines 16 at which 'theblank may be folded to form the corners of the holder, and the parts of the blank which produce the side walls 17 of the holder are of greater depth than the narrower parts 18and19 whichform end walls 20 of the holder. In this way, the side 11' are preferably made-integral with each other by employing a singleblank of slmple rectangular. form; properly scored by a transverse V v One or both of the opposite Walls 17are preferably provided with tongues 23 which may, if desired, be integral withtheside walls and struck from the materialthereofso as'to project slightly inwardly and down- -wardlypreferably inthe manner illustrated line at the hinge connection12.
in Fig. 1. These'tongues tend toexert pres- {sure on' the cigarette 24: in the holder and, )yieldin gly hold them in place. Informing 70 These two members 10 and 11 are preferably f a protecting sheet 25 which is looped at its lower edge where it passes under the lower ends of the cigarettes, and the sides of this sheet extend up on bothsides of :the cigarettes preferably above the mouth :of the holder; This protecting sheet may be made of light paper, foil, or both foil and :paper. Evidently ,the paper folder 25 imparts the pressure from the tongue to the cigarettes and prevents the sharp edge .of the tongue frlomanj uring any cigarette when it is "withdrawn. This folder sheetisalso very usefill in facilitating the filling of the holder,
for "the proper number of cigarettes may 'be placed together in the folder sheet and then insertedbodilyin the holder as will be read ily understood. When the container of:this form is closed, it will be evident that the lower ends of the cigarettes may project through the bottomless holder 14 and the lower ends of the cigarettes lie near the hinge connection 1:2 whichconnects themembers l0 and :11.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I have illustrated another embodi'ment of the invention in which the container isof a more common box form and which, when the container is closed, presents substantially the appearance of an ordinary cigarette box In this form of the invention, 1 provide two members 26 and 27, the latter of which is substantially 0f the form .of the body of a neck box, the main wall 26 of the lid section being preferably formed integral with the main wall 27 of the body section, said main walls being connected by an integral strip 28 which forms the end wall of :the container when closed. At the point of connection between :the strip 28 :and the mainwalls, score lines 29 are formed which facilitate the opening and closing of the container. The body section 27 presents side walls 30 and an end wall 31 and the lid section similarly presents side walls 321andan end wall 33. In this form of container, the holder 34 is of substantially the same form as that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, that is, the side walls 35 are preferably of greater depth than the end walls of the holder so that they present flaps 36 which may be bent outwardly and secured by an'adhes'ive orother means "to the inner faces of the main walls 26* and 27*. In this form of the invention, the holder 34 is also bottomless and the holder, i f desired, may also embody substantially -the same featuresillustrated in Figs. 1 to 4.
It is understood that the embodiment of the invention described above is only one of .the-Irnany embodiments or forms the inven 'tion may take and I do not wish to be limited in the practice of the invention, nor in my claims, to the particular embodiment set ort that I claim is z 1. A container consisting of a pair of hinged'ly connected members adapted to close together sozas to inclose a space there between, constructed to open out and lie extended upon a horizontalsupport, a bottomless dioldea" iof ibo-x z'fOlIIll having side "walls,i'and end walls'ofa width slightlyless than the width Jof=the space inclosed between said JIHGIIlbBIS, said holderkhaving flaps at the :lower end thereof attached to said members respectivelyat zpoints removed from the hinge iconnection therebetween, the lower end of said .holder being :above the hinge end walls for detaining thecigarettes, a side wall of said :holder having an integral tongue extending inwardly and having a cigarette engaging edge between the upper and lower edges of :said holder to exert a slight pressure upon the cigarettes held within the holder.
3. A container for cigarettesconsisting of a pair of i'hingedl-y connected members, a holder of box form ihaving side walls and end walls for retaining the cigarettes, a side 1 wall of said holder having an integral tongue struck therefromextending inwardly to exerta "slight pressure upon the cigarettes held within :the holder, said side walls of said :holder being of greater depth than said end walls "to form integral extensions attached to the inner faces of said members.
4:. A container consisting of a pair of hinge'd'ly connected members, a holder of "box form having side walls and end walls for retaining the cigarettes, a side wall of said holder having an integral tongue struck therefrom and extending inwardly to exert a slight pressure upon the cigarettes held withi-n't'he fholder, -'an'd'a protecting sheet between said tongue and the cigarettes, protecting the cigarettes and imparting the pressure thereto :from said tongue.
5. A container consisting of a pairof hingedly connected members, a holder of box fonm having side walls and end walls for retaining the cigarettes, a side wall of said holder having an integral. tongue struck therefrom and extending inwardly to exert a shgh-t press-are "upon ft'he "cigarettes held 13 within the holder, and a protecting sheet my hand in presence of two subscribing passing unde; 1the lower inner engs oi the witnesses.
