Eo- WARDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes or the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates more particularly to match boxes for carrying paper folders of safety-matches and is an improvement upon the construction of match box shown in my previous Patent No. 866,268 of September 17, 1907. The ob ects of the present invention are to provide a match box or the likein which the carrier isreadily and securely mounted in place; toavoid the necessity of riveting or soldering; to thus avoid tedious and expensive operations in manufacture; to simplify and reduce the amount of hand labor in assembling the match-boxes; to provide a construction wherein use will not tend to loosen the carrier from the case-section; to obtain such a construction which will be neat and durable, and to obtain other advantagesand results as may be brought out in the following description.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open match box constructed in accordance withiny invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the outside of the case-section; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a'portion of the match box showingthe mounting of the carrier therein; Fig. at is a perspective view of a certain removable hinge member Fig. 5'is a transverse sectional view of the case-section looking toward the carrier, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section on line AA of the same.

In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates the case-section or body portion of a match box or the like having hinged thereto at one end as at 2 a cover 3 normally held closed by a suitable spring 4. Pivoted within the match box, and preferably upon the "case-section or body portion, is a carrier 5 adapted to receive a paper or folder of matches 6 and" be swung flatwise within the case-section and covered with the cover-section, or swung outward when the cover-section is opened, as will be readily understood.

In carrying out my invention, the end of the case-section to which the carrier is to be pivoted is cut through at a suitable place preferably providing an elongated hole 7 extending transversely of the case-section,

which will just fit within the socket in peripheral engagement with the shoulder 9 and of such a thickness that when held against the offset portion 8 of the case-sec tion, the outer surface of the rest of the casesection and the hinge member are flush or in the same plane. However, if so desired the line of division between the hinge member and the case-section may be so embodied in the design of the matchbox or the-engraving'thereon that it is unnecessary or not desirableto make the two parts flush and it is accordingly deemed within the scope of the invention to employ any degree of nicety of the fit of the hinge member 10 within the socket desired.

Forming part of the hinge member and projecting through the hole 7 are a pair of longitudinally separated cars 11 through which a hinge pin 12 may be inserted, said pin extendinglongitudinally of the hole 7 and adapted to pass through both ears 11. Furthermore the ears are so proportioned that the pin 12 when inserted therein will rest at its ends upon the offset portion 8 within-the case-section and thereby hold the hinge member seated within the socket. By

this construction no other means than the hinge pin is necessary to hold the hinge member in place, which accordingly avoids any further hand labor than merely inserting the pin, so that soldering or riveting is entirely avoided. y

Preferably the hinge member is of a shape and construction readily manufactured by machine, and for simplicity is made of one piece of material having a portion 13 to fit the socket and the outer surfaceof which is exposed on the outside of the case-section.

the case-section is accordingly made long enough to accommodate the ears on the carrier, and said ears preferably engage a fixed part, such as the ears on the hinge member, for preventing the carrier from moving longitudinally of the hinge pin. Upon the hinge pin, between the ears of the hinge member, is a spring 17 normally tending to swing the carrier outwardly away from the case section. V

In assembling the parts of my improved match box, the hinge member 10 is inserted in the socket in the case section with the ears 11 projecting through the hole 7. The carrier 5 is then brought into. position so the ears 16 thereon are at the opposite ends of the other ears 11, at which time the hinge pin isstarted through the ears. With the hinge pin through the first part of ears the spring 17' is put upon the same and given the proper tension and the hinge pin shoved home, in which position it extends through all of the ears and projects at itsends to overlie the offset portion 8 and thereby retain the hinge member in place and the carrier hinged securely to-the case-section. The outer surface of the hinge member provides a convenient escutcheon for an initial, monogram, or other engraving, especially as it may be replaced very readily if so desired without discarding'the whole match box.

Obviously detail modifications and changes may be made in manufacturing my improved; match box without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I do not wish to be understood as restricting myself except as required by'the in the light of. the prior art.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is "1; -Ina match box or the like, a case-section having a hole therein, a hinge member having a portion adapted to seat upon the outer side. of said case-section and having ears extending through said hole, and a hinge pin extending through said ears and seating upon the inner side of said case-sectionwhereby said hinge member is secured thereto.

In a match box or the like, a, case-section having a hole therein, a. hinge member having a portion adapted to seat upon the outer side of said case-section and having rears extendlng through sa1d hole, a hinge pin extending through said ears and seating upon the inner side of said case-section, whereby said hinge member issecured thereto, and a carrier hinged upon said hinge pin.

In a match box or the like, a case-section having a socket with a hole through its bottom, a hinge member having a portion adapted to seat in said socket and having ears extending through said hole, and a hingepin extending through said ears and seating upon the inner side of said case-section, whereby said hingemember is secured in said socket. V

In a matchbox or the like, a case-sew tion having a socket with a hole through its 7 bottom, a hinge member having a portion adaptedto seat in said socket and in peripheral engagement with the side-wall .of said socket and having ears extending through said hole, and a hinge pin extending through said ears and seating uponthe inner side of said case-section, whereby said hingemember is secured in said socket.

5. In a matchbox or the like, a case section having an aperture therein, a. hinge member extending through said aperture and engaging around the same at the outer side ofthe case section, and a carrier 'secured to said hinge member at the inner side ofthe' case section.

6. In a match box or the like, a case section having an aperture'therein, a member overlapping the outer side of the case section, said member having at its inner side looped strips forming ears extending through the aperture, and a carrier secured to said ears.
