To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, Noiniis C. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Enibroidery-l-loops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in embroidery hoops, and more particularly to that class in which the outer hoop member is adapt-ed to be expanded and contracted,tl1e object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient devices which may be cheaply manufactured and easily applied to the outer hoop member for quickly effecting the expansion or contraction thereof.

A further object is to provide adjusting devices for an embroidery hoop, which shall be substantial in construction and which shall not be liable to become distorted or out of order,at the same time insuring accurate alinement of the inner faces of the hoop member at the meeting ends of the same.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements; Fig. 2 is an edge view partly in section; F ig: 3 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a rear face view.

1 represents the outer hoop member of a pair of embroidery hoops, the ends of which are made with diagonal meeting ends and these ends are caused to approach or recede from each other to eilect the contraction or expansion, with the use of myimprovements.

A plate 2 is securely riveted near one end to the hoop member, near the end 3 thereof, and is of sufiicient length to project well over and beyond the beveled end 4 of the hoop member,such projecting end of the plate being made with an elongated slot 5 and strengthened by a bead 6. A. rivet 7 (preferably of the tubular type) is secured to the end portion 4 of the hoop member and projects through the slot 5, the free end of said rivet being headed or enlarged Specification of Letters Patent.

so as to overhang the side walls of the slot. It will be observed that the end portions of the hoop member are permanently connected by the plate, but that the portion l is movable relatively to said plate. The headed rivet 7 serves to assist in guiding the portion a of the hoop, and said hoop portion 4: is furthermore guided by inivardlyturned flanges 8 at the respective edges of the plate. The plate 2 is enlarged as at 9 and made with a central circular opening 10. The sides of the enlarged portion 9 are bent downwardly and inwardly so as to form continuations of the guide flanges 8 and so as also toform flanges 11 which will embrace the side edges of the end portion 3 of the hoop and prevent pivotal movement of the same relatively to the plate 2.

A wheel or button 12 mounted on the enlarged portion 9 is made with a disk or bottom 13, the peripheral portion of which projects under the inner face of the plate while the edge portion of the wheel or button is disposed over that portion of the plate which surrounds the opening 10. The wheel or button 12 is thus mounted on the plate in Such manner that it may be turned freely but is effectually prevented from cscape or displacement, while the disk or bottom 13 of said wheel or button occupies the opening 10 in the plate.

The disk or bottom 13 of the wheel or button 12 is made with a spiral slot ll through which a headed rivet 15 projects, said rivet being rigidly secured to the movable end portion 4 of the hoop, preferably at one side of the longitudinal center thereof.

From the above description and the drawing, it will be apparent that when the wheel or button 12 is turned in one direction, the cooperation of the walls of the spiral slot with the rivet 15 will cause the beveled ends of the hoop to separate and the hoop to be expanded, and that when the wheel or but ton is turned in the reverse direction, said beveled ends will be caused to approach each other so as to contract the hoop, and clamp material between the latter and an inner hoop (not shown) with which it is used.
