Be it known that I, LEoNcE PICOT, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and correct descriptionthereo'f, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in a 'new and improved double comb, made by coupling together two separate combs, at their backs, by means of a slide-coupling, substantially as herein described, the construction being such that the twoeombs when coupled maybe used as a double comb, or they may be detached from each other at pleasure, 'to 'be used as single combs, or for the convenience of having a. single narrow comb to carry in the pocket, if desired. i

I The slide-coupling may be made by cutting a dov-tail .groove in the back of one of thecombs, and a corresponding dove-tal teuon or bead on the back of the other, but I prefer to make the two parts oi' the coupling of metal, and attach them to the backs of the combs, thel combs being thereby strengthened, and the coupling more permanent. p v l But in orderto more particularly describe my said invention, I will refer to the accompanying drawings, which illustratedii'erent' forms of myimproved double and detachable comb.

The form o'fmetallic coupling which I prefer is shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6, g. 4 being a plan view of a double comb formed by coupling two short ue combs, iig. 5 a section oi' the same, and iig. 6 a plan view of a. double comb, formed by coupling together two combs, one a dressing-comb and the other a short iine comb, thesection being thesame as iig. 5. i i

In these figures, the backs of the combs a a have a groove or channel out in them the whole length of the back, and metallic ribs or plates, b 6', 'inserted in thc-grooves, and fastened by rivets or cement, or in any c'on. venient way. A

The coupling isp-formed -by a bead or circular dove-tail tenen, c; on the back of thcmetal rib bof one of the combs, and a circular dove-tail groove or slotted tube, d, on the back of the metal rib of the other comb, the two being fitted nicely to each other, so as to couple by sliding the bead c' into the groove al, and uncouple by sliding them apart.

` The other form of coupling, represented by Figures l, 2,and 3, diiex's from that above described only in the fact that the metal ribs e e embrace the backs of the combsff, instead of .being inserted in the backs, the dovetail bead g and dove-tail groove It, on the backs-oi' the ribs, being the saine as the bead c and groove d in the iigs. 4, 5, and 6. l

I have shown what I consider the best forms of my invention, but do not limit myself to the special forms of construction herein described, so long as my said invention cfa double detachable comb, formedby coupling two singlecombs together at their backs by a slide-coupling, be attained.

My improved double detachable comb maybe made of horn, shell, hard rubber, wood, metal, or any other material that combs are made of.

I claim as my invention and improvement 'in combsl l A double comb, formed by coupling two combs together at their backs by a sliding coupling, so that they may be detached' from each other at pleasure by sliding them apart, and used as single combs, substantially as hereinbefore described. .f
