WILL IAM FINN, 01* PO UGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. 67,968, dated August 20, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-PROP.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FINN, of Pougbkcepsie, in the county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Carriage-Prop; and I do. hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in w-hieh Figure 1 is a plan or top view partly in section of my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken on the line a: x, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical crosssection of the same, taken on the line 3 y, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new mapner of attaching the standard of a carriage-prop to the side of the bow, and also to a device for preventing the nut, by which the joint-bars are held on the standard, from being turned and lost by the motion of the said joint-bars and by the rattling of the wagon. The standard is provided with a wedge-shaped dove-tail tenon, which fits into a corresponding groove that is provided in a plate which is firmly secured to the how. The edges of the leather covering can be clamped by this tenon in the groove. Between the nut and the outer joint-bar is interposed a washer, which fits around a square or polygonal part of the standard, thereby preventing the motion of thejoiut-bar from affecting the position of the nut.
A represents a portion of the bow of a carriage; B is a metal plate, which is secured to the how by means of screws a a. A circular projecting portion, b, is formed on the plate B, and in it is formed a dove-tail wedgeshaped groove or recess, 0. G is the standard, which is made with a broad base, as shown 'in fig. 1. To its inner end is secured a dove-tail wedge-shaped tenon, cl, which fits into the groove 0, and by which tl r e standard can be easily secured to the how. The tenon may be made a little longer than the groove c, so that a screw, :1, may be passed through the same into the bow, as shown in figs. 2 and 3. The leather covering may be laid over'the plate B, and clamped by the tenon d, as indicated in fig. -1. D D are the joint-bars, which are fitted around the cylindrical portion f of the standard, so as to turn freely thereon. g is a washer, having a square or polygonal hole, and fitting around a corresponding part of the standard, as shown in figs: and 2. it is the nut by which the washer and joint-arms are secured to the standards. The washer is interposed between the nut and'the outermost joint-arm.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The standard C, When provided with a dove-tailed wedge-shaped tenon, 01, in combination with the plate 13, which has a wedge-shape l dove-tailed groove, 0, in a circular projection, b, as set forth.
WILLIAM FINN.
