LYON, or CBANESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BRAIIE-SI-IOE KEY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN G. SEAMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Shoe Keys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to keys for brakeshoes, and has for its object the production of a key for securing a brake-shoe in place, which can be easily inserted and removed, and which when in place will firmly secure the brake-shoe to the head, so that it cannot become accidentally disengaged there from, while at the same time it can easily be removed when it is desired to detach the brake-shoe.
In pursuance of these objects I make my improved key preferably of spring steel, with a longitudinal slot therein and with slight projections on its edges opposite the slot therein, so that when the key is inserted into the brake-head the slot therein allows the edges of the key opposite the slot to spring inward so as to allow the projections thereon to pass through the openings in the brake-head and shoe, and when it is in place to spring outward again, so as to engage the brake-head and thus prevent its becoming accidentally displaced.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side view in elevation of a brake-head and shoe showing my improved key therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the brake and brake-shoe on the line 00-00 showing my key in elevation therein. 3 is a view in perspective of my improved brake-shoe key.
In these drawings illustrating my invention, A is an ordinary brake-head; B a brake-shoe, and D the brake-shoe key. On the brake-head A there are the usual projections A A at its upper and lower ends,

and central projections A A between which central projections a lug B on the brakeshoe B, extends when the ends of the brakeshoe contact with the projections A A on the brake-head, and through the extensions .A A and A A? on the brake-head, and
the lug B on the brake-shoe there are slots (4 a, a a and b all of which aline with each other, and through which the brake-shoe key is inserted.
The brake-shoe key E (Fig. 3) is made preferably of a fiat strip of spring steel, somewhat thicker at its upper end 6 than at its lower end 6, and at its upper end e it is provided with a rearwardly turned head E adapted to be engaged by a pinch-bar inserted between it and the brake-head when it is desired to remove the key. In this key approximately about one third of its length from the lower end 6 thereof, I make an elongated slot 6 and centrally of said slot e I form slight rounded projections e e on the edges of the key, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 8, and as the key E is pressed into the slots a, a and b, the slot 6 allows the edges of the key opposite to the projections 6 e to move toward each other until they pass down below the lowermost of the projections A on the brake-head A, after which the edges of the key will spring outward again and engage the lower side of the projection A as is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to firmly retain the key E from any upward movement, but if desired, a pinch-bar can be inserted between the head E of the key and the top of the brake-head A, and the key E withdrawn therefrom.
Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A brake-shoe key having a longitudinal slot cut therethrough, intermediate of the ends thereof, both ends of said slot being closed, substantially as set forth.
2. A brake-shoe key having a longitudinal slot therein which will permit the edges of the key opposite said slot to be sprung toward each other, and projections on the edges of the key opposite said slot, substantially as set forth.
3. A spring metal brake-shoe key having a longitudinal slot therein intermediate of its length which will permit the edges of In testimony whereof I atlix my signature, the key opposite said slot to be sprung toin presence of two Witnesses.
Ward each other, substantially as set forth.
' LA spring metal brake-shoe key having ORRIN a longitudinal slot therein which will permit Witnesses: the edges of the key opposite said slot to be GEO. W. LYON, sprung toward each other, and projections R. E. BRACE.
on the edges of the key opposite the slot in said key, substantially as set forth. a
