IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-BLCCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,228, dated December 26, 1871.

In the drawing, A is the head-block. a is the aforesaid bar, the same being provided with vertical racks b, which extend downward from the bar a near the ends thereof. 0 are metal anglebars fastened to the side of the head-block opposite the racks b, which bear against the angle-- bars. at is a horizontal shaft mounted in theprojecting parts of the angle-bars, and having pinions e situated within the plates 0, which engage with the racks b. g is a ratchet on the shaft (1 outside one of the plates 0, and with said ratchet engages a spring-pawl, h, secured to the adjacent plate a. By means of a lever applied to the shaft cl the latter may be rotated so as to raise or lower the bar a to the extent requisite to cause the latter to support the end of a crooked log which cannot be supported by the head-block.

This arrangement is used in connection with adjustable dogs j k, the construction and operation of which I am aware are not new.
