i3-tiraitr s. Lvon'D, ornAaMoY, NEW YORK.
y Letters Patent No. 102,904,dated`Mcy 10, 11870.
IMPRovnMnNfr 'IN B TANc'IoNs Pon sncURING car-run.
The `Schedule referred to in these Letters lI-Vatent and making part of the same.`
Be it known that ,VELIJH S. ALvoRD, of Har` mony, in the eountyoffChautauqua and in the v State i of `New York, liaveinvented certain new and useful `Improvementsin `Stanehions for Securing Cattle; and
do herebydeclare thatlthe followingis a full, clear,
and exact de scriptionthereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings and tothe letters `of reference :marked herenn making a part of this specifica;
" The nature of my invention consists in the con- Istruction and arrangement of a stanchion for securing cattle, so `that all or any number may be 'letout at anytime. j `i I der to enableothersv skilled in the art to which'my invention appertains to make and-use the sain e,.I will now proceed to describe .its construction and operation,referring to theannexe'ddrawin'g, ,in
Figure 2 is a plan view of `a section of my inven- The stanchion is tojbe placed at the entrance to the j stalls, and is constructcdin thej following manner:
.lwo Vbeams orlbars, A, are placed at the bottom or vioor, and between them "is secured a series of uprights, B B, which is wider at the bottom than at the topformay-be of thefsame width. l `'.lhe upper ends of theuprights B B are securedbetween bars G O', theouter oneot which, C', is narreach-up to the upper edges of l the space between Vthe uprights BB, are 'pivoted other upright bars D D, the upper ends of which pass between thc 'upper'horizontal bars O G', but are-netscvcured to either of them,`
i On top `of the* bar"( ]"is`placed a sliding bar, E, which rmoves sidewiseiuguides Gr` G, and vis at vone end-pro vided with a small rack-bar, a, which gears with a pinion, `b, mounted on a shaft between the endsof' the bars G andjG', saidpiniou being turned by a crank, d,
so that the slidingbar E :may by this means be moved to either side.
flhepivoted` bars D Dare held ina vertical position'by pinse on one side, and by a hinged leaf, H,
` `on'the other, or `the lside toward the crank d. At and under the oiiterendso'f the leaves HH are pivoted bentleversii. i
` I Ontheinnerside of theV sliding bar E, Aand on each side of eachof the pivotedbars D, is placed a spring, o, which projects inward so as tn strlke tliebar D,4 if the sliding bar is moved in either direction, and'also .strike the lever i, so as to raise'the leat` H.
A spring., I, secured to thehorizontal bar Gf, holds the crank d,V when not desired to turn'the same.
It will readily be seen that, by turning the crank d, l y the springs o o on the side of the bars D D farthest from the .crank first raise the' l'evers 'i t' suiicient-'to lift-the leaves H H, to allow the same springs to move the said bars D D to one side, when the cattle can be' putin or let out all `at once. By pressing the springp on the chion, and thenitis ready to shut that one with the rest. Or by pressing the spring -ou the other side of tlie s tanchion, he can put up either one separately',
and the spring will also adj ust itself.
The springs o o may be entirely pressed iu and Y drawn through -the bar E,'aud held by pins so that one or more cattle may be left in the stable, and the others taken out and put in atpleasure.
Having t-h-us fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the pinion 'or cog-,wheel b,
crank spring I, an'd rack-bar a, for operating the sliding 'bar E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth..
2. The sliding bar'E, with springs o o, for working the stanchions D D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.v I
` 3. The/spring o, elbow or lever c', and leaf or latchv H, all constructed and arranged to operate-substan-- tially as and for the purposes herein set fort-h.
4. The combination and larrangement of the frame,`
A B O G', stanchions D D, sliding bar E, rack a, pinio'n b, crank d, spring I, springs o o, levers fifi, and
leaves H H, all constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth;
'Inv testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of September, 1869. ELIJAH S. AINORD.

side of the stanchion D nearest the crank, it will em ble the operator 'to let out either of the -cattle separately, and, when the rest arel let out, the said `spring will pass the stan-
