Description
M. P. HERRES.
WOOD SAW.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 22. 1919.
1,324,117. Patented Dec. 9,1919.
INVENTOR WITNESSES Mzcmel Rflerres ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL P. HERRES, OF PEOLA, WASHINGTON.
WOOD-SAW.
Application filed January 22, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL P. I-Innnns,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Peola, in the county of Garfield and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood-Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for wood saws and has for its primary obj ect to provide a fastening or securing means for holding the frame of a portable power saw upon a log while cutting the same, said securing means being of simple construction and of few parts and so applied to the frame that the latter may be positioned upon the log and rigidly but temporarily secured thereto by manipulating a single lever, the reverse movement of said lever as quickly disengaging the frame when it is desired to move the saw to another log or to another portion of the same log.
With the above as the principal object in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointedout in.
the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 1s a side elevation of a portable saw frame with the improved securing means applied thereto in position on a log.
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. V i
In the drawing, 10 andll are two longitudinal frame beams placed side by side and slightly inclined with relation to each other,
' the narrower ends of said beams being connected together a cross brace 12. The opposite end of each of said beams has secured to its under side adownwardly projecting spur 13 for engagement'with the top of the log when the beams 10 and 11 are in position for use. The beams 10 and 11 which serve as a support for the saw operating machinery and the driving motor therefor also supports a rocking shaft 14: extending across the top sides of said beams and secured in place thereon by staples 15 or other bearings.
' Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Serial No. 272,548.
with a plurality of perforations 18 to receive a pivot pin 19 mounted in the arms 16. The pin 19 is removable to permit longitudinal adjustment of the hook 17 to fit the same to logs of different diameters.
Connected to the rock shaft 14 adjacent the beam 10 is a spring arm 20 having a clamp 21 on one end for securing it to said rock shaft and. a handle 22 on its opposite end to be grasped by the hand for rocking the shaft 14. At one side of the handle 20 is a tooth 23 that engages one of a series of notches in a rack plate 24 attached to the beam 10 and concentric with the axis of the shaft 1 1.
Constructed as described, the beams 10 and 11 with the saw mechanism mounted thereon and resting at one end on the ground is placed with its other end on a log A and the spurs 13 driven into said log. The handle 20 is raised to its highest position and the point 18 on the end of the hook 17 passed below the log. Should, however, the diameter of the log be too great to permit this, the pin 19 is withdrawn frgm the arms 16 and the hook lowered until in proper position whereupon the pin 19 is returned into place and engages a new perforation 18 in said hook. The handle 22 is now grasped and the rock shaft 14 rocked in its bearings by lowering said handle, the movement raising the arms 16 and with it the hook 17 which enters the under side of the log and firmly secures the frame in place, the tooth .23 engaging one of the notches in the curved plate 24: prevents return movement of the handle 20 and disengagement of the hook 17.
I claim:
A frame, comprising two longitudinal beams connected at one end and provided at their free ends with spurs, a cross shaft mounted on-the beams and having ofistand ing arms, a hook having adjustable connection with the said arms and adapted to cooperate with:the said spurs, a spring lever clamped to the shaft, and a rack attached toone of the beams and adapted to engage the spring lever to yieldably hold it in the required adjusted position. 7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL P. HERRES. Witnesses:
JOHN H. BEIKEL, IRA F. KING.
