IMPROVE'D BREAD-'GUTTER'.
dln tigentlt rentra tait time ttttsrs @dan alienating pnt nf the stan.
Be it' known that I, JAMES D. SOLES, of the township of Lynn, county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Device for Cutting lor Slicing Dried Beef, Bread, ori/vegetables, for domestic use; and'I do hereby declare that the lfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and'operation of the same, 'reference being had to theannexed drawings, making a part of this specilicuton, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. i
`Figure 2, a plan.4 Figure 3, end elevation. p
This machine consists of Va board, H, on which I erect the standard .or arched plate A, of iron, between standards 'or sides of arch. The width ot' plate forrning arch andv supports,`may be suii'ciently'thick to be of the requisite strength. It has a flange, t', or brace, projecting at right angles from the standard next to lower end of'lever C, and is on a line with the inner side of standard, and-cast in one piece with the bed-plate m,on which it rests, .and the arched plate or standard A A. l
The bed-plate hasabevelled cutting-edge on a line with theface of standards, as a'n` auxiliary cutter' to knife D, and is istinto the board4 Hv'just its thickness, and-lies dush with the surface of the board and fastened `with' screws. l To form a slot for lever C, a plate, B, -for -guide' to the same, z'. e., the-lever, is placed at a suf- {icient distance from arched standard, (or, rather, the faceof same,) ofthe same width and thickness, and following the curve' of the arch from near its top, and then descending 'parallel with the outer standard to the surface ofthe board H, where a projecting plate, ppierced with screw-hole, admits of its fixture to the board. On' the side of the standards from which the ange or brace projects, isplaced'the T-shaped adjustable guide F for the bread or beef to be cut, and having a perpendicular face or raised edge towards the object to be cut, which may he made of east iron, and with, a slot'atright angles to the raised edge, and into which a thumb-screw is adjusted `'in a thread in th'e board below. On the opposite side of bed-plate m' is the adjustable iron gauge E,
about. thesame length as the bied-plate, vand of an oblong shape, with'a raised odge towards the knife, againstwhich the face of the object to be cut is placed, when thickness of thc slice is to be regulated. Two slots, one
at each end of the gauge, at right angles to the knife, for admission of the 4thumb-screwsef, one to each slot, y and passing into thc board-below. A t the entrance of rthe slot, into the surface' of theboard, is screwed a gauge, gpfor the regulationof the descent of the lever C, which-may beeithereav screw, o cutter D is long enough to entend beyond the inner sides of the standard, so as to givethe edge a good bearing against' the polished facie of-.the arched'standard AA. It. may be made about three inches in width and one inch wide at'thc end nearest fulcrum .of lever, and isv riveted to lever, which is about two feet in length for hotl use, but-smaller forother uses, with suflicient thickness for strength. The end erv fulcrum ofthe leveris pivoted inthe iron clevs or standard yGr, placed in a line withthe face of the arched standards A A, and secured by amvable bolt, for the'purpose -ot'iremoving the lever to grind or sharpen the knife. Underthe lever, and near its fulcrum G, is placed the spiral or cylindrical spring VS, or a spring 'ofshape'ulq's't suitable, and secured in `position by the bent projecting ends of the wire of the spring entering correspinding holes, one in the under side of the lever, the other in'tho surface ot' thebourd I'I. The other arm or handle of the lever t projects a sufficient distance beyond "the standard to give a good purchase to the hand of the operator. A slot is cut in the boar-a for the admission of the knife.
The operation of this device is as followsa The substance to be cut is-,jlacdv'on the bed-plate m,previously adjusting the guide F, topress the saine against the ilange t', and also adjusting the gauge E for regulating the thickness of the' slices to'be cut. Thclhandleh is then pressed downluntl the edge ofthe knife at the broadest part of same reaches the edge of the bed-plate m, when the cutting-edge of the latter .comes into use.. On,being released, after the cutis'made, the spring S'carries thc knife to top 4of the slot, ready for another cut. The knife and lever can be readily removed for sharpenihg it, by withdrawing the bolt i'rorn the clevis G'. -The brace or flange z acts as a surface, -against which the object to be cut is securely held and prevented from spreading or crumbling. i
The advantages of this device arera thumb-screw. The
First, its simplicity of construction.
Second, effectiveness of operation,
Third, non-liability, from its simplicity, from getting out of order.
Fourth, its cheapness.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi The combination ofthe arched standard A, its guide-plate B', and flange and bed-plate m, the gauge E,
I the guide F, the spring S, the lever and knife C and D, all as and for thepurposes described.
