Description

M. A. DARBY.
FOLDING WARDROBE. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 18. 1915. RENEWED DEC. 1, I916.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
2 SHEETS-SHEET I.
MICHAEL A. DARBY, 0F BERGEN, NEW YORK.
FOLDING WARDROBE.
Leeann.
Application filed February 18, 1915, Serial No. 9,138. Renewed December 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, MICHAEL A. DARBY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bergen, in the county of Genesee and S tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in robes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding wardrobes and'its object is to produce a device of this class that can be readily assembled and attached to a door or wall or other supporting surface and as readily removed and folded into portable shape.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illus- D trated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved wardrobe in assembled position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front view, partly in section, of the wardrobe.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view of the device in folded position.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 designates a door to which my wardrobe may be attached by means of the metal straps or supports 2, 2. The wardrobe proper comprises a folding frame consisting of the channeled base rail 3 carried directly by the straps 2, 2 and provided at each end with the castings 4, 4 in which one end of the lateral rods 5, 5 are pivotally secured, said rods being further secured in position by means of the set screws 6, 6 which extend through the projections 7, 7 of castings 4, 4 and into said rods. The rods releasably carry at their free extremities the cross rod 8 and at their longitudinal centers they carry another cross rod 9 similar in all respects to the rod 8. The said rod 9 is adapted to slidably Specification of Letters Patent.

carry the garment hangers 10 upon which the garments are directly carried within the frame just described.
The lateral rods 5, 5 are provided with rings 11 that carry the curtains 12, 12 that each extend half way across the front of the frame and are provided along their meeting edges with buttons by means of which they may be fastened together. A top portion 13 provided with a flap 14 engages the upper edge of the curtains 12, 12 and is frictionally retained in operative position between the base rail 3 and the wardrobe support 1. In Fig. 1 the wardrobe is shown assembled. To collapse and remove the same the top is first removed by withdrawing one edge from between the base rail and support, the set screws 6, 6 are removed from engagement with the lateral rods 5, 5, the cross rods 8, 9 are removedfrom said lateral rods which rods are then folded into the channeled portion of the base rail, the garment hangers removed from the cross rods, the ends of the cross rods disposed in the extensions 7 the curtains 12, 12 rolled up and retained in rolled position, together with the cross rods, by means of the straps 15, 15 carried by the channeled base rail.
at is claimed is:
1. 'A folding wardrobe comprising a supporting element, a channeled base rail carried by and spaced away from said supporting element, lateral arms pivotally associated with said base rail and adapted to be folded thereinto, cross rods removably carried by said lateral arms, garment hangers carried by said cross rods, curtains supported by said lateral arms and adapted to be frictionally retamed in operative relation by said base rail and said supporting element, and a flap carried by said top for engagement with said curtains.
2. A folding wardrobe comprising a channeled base rail, castings formed with extensions carried at the ends of said base rail, lateral arms pivotally carried by said castings and releasably secured to said extensions, cross rods removably carried by said lateral arms and adapted when in inoperative position to be terminally disposed as my own I have hereto aflixed my signa- 1n sald extensions, garment hangers releasture 1n the presence of tWo subscribing W1tably carried by sald cross roads and straps nesses.
carried by said base rail for engaging and MICHAEL A. DARBY. supporting said lateral arms and cross rods Witnesses: When in folded or inoperative position. THOMAS F. DARBY,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing JOHN DARBY.
