Application filed April 8, 1915. Serial No. 20,029.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIA'M N. STACEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield. in the county of llampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Binding and Holding a Sanitary Slab, such as Porcelain or the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means and apparatus for binding and holding a sanitaryslab. such as porcelain or the like, for a lunchroom chair arm, a table top, and other analogous uses.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for holding and supporting a slab of porcelain or similiar material in a rigid and safe manner, said means being so constructed that no crevices, cracks, or holes are present in the top surface of the assembled device into which moisture or foreign matter can enter to render the surface unsanitary.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clai'nping and holding frame by which a slab of suitable material, such as porcelain, can be rigidly held, and its edges protected without any holes being necessary in. the slab. said frame forming together with the slab a perfectly smooth unbroken top surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamping frame for a slab of suitable material, such as porcelain, whereby the slab is clamped around its edge between two separate members of the frame, and the frame is provided with a recess around and extending over the upper edge of the slab which recess may be filled with cement.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the detailed description and more particularly in the annexed claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of the frame member assembled as it holds the porcelain slab; Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. t is a detail sectional View taken on the line 4c--'l of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a de tail sectional view taken'on the line of Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 2, the frame, preferably made of metal, is shown in a form suitable lhe bottom frame member is lndicated by 1 and comprises a supporting ledge for the porcelain slab, as indicated in Figs. 3, l.
y and 5, and depending flanges S for con nection with the supporting arm of the chair 111 any suitable manner. Suitable cross members, as indicated in Fig. 2. stiilen and brace the bottom frame member and provide supports on which to convenientlv position the flanges The ledge of this bottom frame provided around its entire edge with an upstanding flange and at intervals with upstanding lugs 5 for a purpose to be described. The top frame memher is indicated at 2 in Figs. 1, El. -l-, and and comprises a closed band having a hookshaped upper extension which overlaps the edge of the porcelain slab 3 and a depending flange 10 extending entirely around the frame. In this upper frame member. there are provided depending lugs l which register with the upstanding lugs 5, and the two frame members 1 and 2 are bound together by means of the blind-screws 6 passing through the lugs l and 5. The upper hook-shaped port-ion of the upper frame member is best seen in Figs. l and 5, and it will be noticed that a recess is provided hctween the frame members and the porcelain slab which recess surrounds the entire outer and upper edges of the porcelain slab.
\Vhcn the apparatus is assembled, the
porcelain slab is placed against the hookshaped member of the top fral-ne portion when this portion is upside down. Cement is then filled in all around the outer .edge of the slab so that it completely surrounds this edge and the top edge as indicated at 7 in Fig. The lower frame member is then placed against the bottom surface of the slab so that the lugs t and lugs 5 register. The screws 6 may then draw the two frame portions to bind the frame and slab together, and the cement which is provided in excess quantity in the recess will be forced therein to fill the recess, surround the outer ed go of the slab member 3, and extend over the edge of that member. The apparatus is then turned right side up, and, when whatever cement is squeezed out between the upper frame member and the top surface of the slab is scraped away and the cement is hardenei'l, the apparatus is ready for use.
The depending flange 10 and the upper hook-shaped portion ofthe frame member porcelain and analogous materials for handling foods, but considerable difliculty has been found in a suitably mounting such materials in a proper manner. The device shown herein makes such materials available in a novel and useful manner.
in the appended claim What I claim is A sanitary tray armfor a luncheon chair or the like, comprising, in combination, a lower closed loop frame having means formed onits under side to support it from a chair or the like and provided with a flat upper supporting surface, a slab of porcelain or like Washable material ar-' ranged torest on said surface and be supported therefrom, an upper tray frame,
comprising, a closed loop arranged to fit over the Tower 'rame and the slab to conceal the formeand to form a smooth unbroken rounded rim around and above said slab, said frame being of substantially hookshaped cross-section and formed with a short inner depending flange to rest on the slab and a longer outer depending flange to form a skirt to conceal the lower frame and protect the user from corners and rough edges,.a series of lugs formed on the interior of said tray frame and depending therefrom, securing devices arranged to pass through the lower frame and into said lugs to draw the frames together to force the v slab into engagement with the short inner My invention 1s more partlcularly defined depending flange on the tray frame, all constructed and arranged so that a recess is provided under the tray frame and around the top marginal portions and the side edges of the slab, and cement or the like filling said recess to form a closed water tight joint between the frame and the top surface of.
the slab.
