Description

No. 685,901. Patented Nov. 5, l90l. s. BAKER. BAIL SUPPORVTER.
(Application filed May 10, 1901.)
(N0 ModeL) int/22.5565 ,r/r/
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS BAKER, OF PAWPAW, ILLINOIS.
BAlL-S UPPQRTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,901, dated November 5, 1901. Application filed May 10, 1901. Serial No. 59,561. on model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SILAS BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawpaw, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bail- Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bail-supporters; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device which can be readily attached to kettles or other cooking utensils and which is adapted to hold the bail in such position that it does not rest against the kettle, thus preventing said hail from becoming heated.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion ofa kettle, showing myim proved bail-supporter attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bail-supporter, showing a portion of the kettle broken away. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View taken on line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4is a perspective view of the bail-supporter.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A represents the body of the device, and is composed of metal or other suitable material. It is semicircular in shape, having an annular flange B,tu rned at right angles to and on its circular edge. Said flange B has on its edge a series of notches or serrations into which the bail C of the kettle is adapted to fit. The body A has also near its center a hole D, adapted to register with the hole Gr in the ear E of the kettle and is adapted to allow the bail C to pass through. The body A has formed on each'of its corners and integral therewith the lugs E, which serve for attaching or clamping the bail-supporter to the ear of the kettle.
In applying my bail-supporter to kettles the body A is placed on the inside of the ear E of the kettle, the hole D registering with the hole G in the ear E for the reception of the bail. The lugs F are then bent around the ear E, thereby securely clamping or attaching the device to the ear E. The bail O is then inserted in the ordinary manner through the holes in the ear E and the body A, the notches on the flange 13 engaging the bail C and holding it in any desired position.
It is evident that slight changes may be made in the manner of attaching my bail-supporter to kettles or other vessels without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not Wish to be limited to the exact method of attaching it as herein set forth; but,
Having described my invention, what I desire to claim as new and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination of a kettle having cars near its upper rim engaging a wire bail, a
semicircular piece of metal adapted to be secured to said ears, an annular flange formed on the circular edge of said metal piece, notches formed in theedge of the fiange, adapted to hold or support the bail, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a kettle having ears near its upper rim, engaging wire bail, a semicircular piece of metal havingahole near its center, and having an annular flange formed onits circular edge, a series of notches formed in the edge of the flange adapted to engage and hold the wire bail, lugs for attaching the semicircular piece of metal to the ears of the kettle, substantially as described.
SILAS BAKER.
