Description
mi L UNITED STATES FREDRICH HOFF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DESKS AND BEDS COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,632, dated August 1, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICH Horn, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Combined Desk and Bed; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a desk embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is avertical transverse central section of the same, showing those parts which are at the left hand of the line x drawn vertically through Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, when adjusted, showing the position of the mattress. v
Similar letters of reference indica-te like parts in the several ligures of the drawing.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of desks designed more especially for office use; and the improvement consists in constructing the desk in two parts, so arranged as to be opened or closed, and within which is secured a folding mattress, so arranged as to be unfolded by the opening of the two parts of the desk, thereby forming a cheap and convenient bed; also,'consists in the detailed construction of the same, whereby two separate writing-desks are formed, to be used at will, either in a standing or sitting position, by the person using the same, the whole of which will be more fully understood from the following description:
In the drawing, A represents the fixed or rear portion of the desk, and A the front or moving portion. B is a partition, which extends longitudinally across the part A at a point-slightly above the upper surface of the part A, which forms two separate apartments, C and C. The upper apartment C is arranged to receive books, letters, papers, &c., in the usual manner. The
rear portion of the part A is so arranged as to form an apartment or closet, D. Pivoted to the sides of the parts A and A, within the apartments C and D, is a frame, E, jointed in its center, as shown at F. Secured upon and around the pivot connecting the hinges of frame E is a spiral spring, d, the ends of which are firmly secured in the cross-pieces of the frame, the object being to hold the said parts of the frame together by the recoiling of the spring when said frame is unfolded. Firmly secured to and upon the said frame E is a mattress, G, which is made in two parts, thereby admitting of being folded within the frame. Hinged to the upper portion of the part A is a cover, H, forming the upper surface of the desk. J is a door, which is hinged to the front portion of the part A at e, and is so arranged as to cover the drawers when closed, and when opened to admit of being secured in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby forming a desk or table upon which a person may Write, &c., when in a sitting position.
In using my improvement for a bed the part A is moved forward, which unfolds the mattress, bringing the same to a horizontal position, and when not in use the part A is moved back, thus folding the mattress within apartments C and D, thereby forming a cheap and convenient combined bed and desk.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combined desk and bed, the combination of the parts A A, partition B, frame E, spiral spring d., bed or folding mattress C, cover H, and door J all arranged to operate substantially as specified. v
The foregoing specification of my invention signed by me this 15th day of April, 1871.
, FREDRICH HOPF.
Vitnesses:
N. G. GRIDLEY, N. H. SHERBURNE.
