Description

I C. WIRTH.
DOOR SPRING.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 5. 19-15.
Patented July 6, 1915.
WITNESSES Ill/VENTOR Charles WLTHQ By W Ana/nuns CHARLES WLPQTH, NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, dSSIG-IQO'E T0 IMPERIAL NOVELTY 0F NEWARK, It. J1, 0F NEVTARK, NEW JERSEY, A. GORPQEATION 0F JERSEY.
Lll ldjtdlw Application filed may 5, 1815.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES WIRTII, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Door--Spring, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved door spring arranged for convenient attachment to any door and adapted to hold the door normally closed and to cause closing of the door after the same has been opened and released by a party passing through the doorway.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a spring coil having its ends terminating in arms extending sidewise in opposite directions and adapted to bear one against the door casing and the other against the door, and a retaining device held onfone of the convolutions of the coil and adapted to engage a fixed part on the door casing to hold the door spring in position on the door and its casing. Use is also made of a bracket adapted to be fastened to the door casing and provided with ahead adapted to be engaged by the retaining devlce of the door spring.
A. practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the views. 1
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved door spring, as applied, the door and door casing being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a face view of the same with a portion of the coil shown in section; Fig.3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a face view of the same with the bracket in difl erent position and part of the coil being broken out; Fig. 5 is a cross section of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4[; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the door spring as applied to one of the door hinges, the door and its casing being shown in section; Fig. 7 is a cross section of the same on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a perspective viewof the retaining device.
The door is preferably made of spring wire bent into a coil A having its ends ter- Initiating in arms B and C extending sidewise in opposite directions and adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.

bear on the faces of the door D and the door casing E, respectively, of which the door D is connected by the usual hinges F (see Figs. 6 and 7) with the door casing E. The side arms B and C are under tension when the door D is closed, and this tension is increased when. the door D is opened so that when the door is released after being opened then the side arm B forces the door D shut.
lYithin the coil A is arranged a retaining device G, preferably its the form of a segmental plate, provided with an eye G engaging one of the convolutions of the coil A so as to support the plate within the coil A. The plate G engages the under side of head H having a neck H extending from a bracket H secured by a bolt, screw or other fastening device I, to the door casing E and at a point intermediate the casing and the door, as plainly shown in the drawings. The bracket H may be located at any pointin the height of the door casing, preferably, however, intermediate the hinges F. For very heavy doors two or more door springs as described may be used. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the coil A of the door spring is securely held in position on the bracket H by the use of the retaining plate G and consequently the door spring is not liable to shift on the door and is not liable to become accidentally detached. The bracket H may be attached to the eas- 1ng with the head H and its neck H ex? tending upward, as shownin Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or the head and neck may extend in a downward direction, and 5.
The bracket H with its head H and neck i may be dispensed with and in this case the coil A is slipped over the head F of the pintle F of the hinge F, as shown in F1gs..6 and 7, with the retaining plate G engaging the neck F of the head F. In this case the lowermost convolution of the 0011 A rests on top of the hinge F, and the retaining plate G has its eye G engaging the next following convolution, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 6, so that the plate G snugly engages the neck F. In practice, the retaining plate G is preferably made from a single piece of sheet metal stamped out to the desired shape and doubled up, as indicated in Fig. 8. V
as indicated in Figs. 4.
In order to securely hold the bracket H in position on the door casing E the face of the bracket in contact With the casing is provided with lugs H and a vertically disposed rib H adapted to be embedded in the material of the door casing E to hold the bracket against accidental shifting.
The side arms B and C, are preferably of U shape and their outer ends are covered by soft materials such as rubber tubings J to prevent the arms from engaging or marring the faces of'the doorlD and the casing E.
-lhe door spring shown and described is very simple in construction and can be readily applied to the door and its casing either by the use of the bracket Hflor Without the use of thersama Icy-attaching the coil A to the head of one of the hinge pintles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A door spring, comprising a spring coil having its ends terminating in arms extending sidewise in opposite directions, and a retaining device held on the said coil and Within the said coil and having an eye en-- gaging one 'of the convolutions of the said coil to support the plate, and a bracket on the door and having a head and a reduced neck engaged by the said plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
CHARLES WIRTH.
