ARTHUR J. I-IOLDSWOR'IH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OHRISTIAN SCHNEIDER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
' COVER-HOLDER FOR GLASS JARS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1913.
Applieationfiled June 23, 1915. Serial No. 35,911.
To all whom it may concern: 1 1
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. Hows- WORTH, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of W ayne,:State of Michigan, have invented a certain. new and useful Improvement in Cover-Holders for Glass Jars and the like, and declare the following to be a full,- clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to cover holders for glass-jars and the like and its object is a cheap and efficient devicewhereby a glass or eathenware cover may be held in hinged relation with a body of like material. A further object of the invention is a device for the purpose stated having a limited adjustment whereby it is adapted for use with jars of different diameters. These and other objects and the novel features of construction] by which they may be attained are hereinafter more fully describedand claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is an elevation of a jar showing my holding device with the cover in the open position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a plan view on an enlarged scale of the cover holding device.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the end of the device for attaching to the cover.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throu hout the drawing and specification.
As indicated in Fig. 3, the device consists of a ring shaped member 1, the two ends of which are bent at practically right angles and apertured to receive a bolt 2. One end 3 extends a little distance beyond the other, terminating in a portion 4 bent at right angles to the part 3 for a purpose hereinafter mentioned. By using a comparatively long bolt 2 and interposing washers 5 between the ends of the ring shaped member 1, the device may be varied in size to correspond with the size of the neck of a jar 6 for instance, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Pivoted on the bolt 2 is the cover holder member 7 preferably formed of wire and having an aperture at the end through which the bolt passes. This member 7 is bent preferably in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 having an upwardly extending loop portion 8 and terminating in a substantially semi-circular portion 9 for engaging about the knob 10 of the cover 11. An additional semi-circular portion 12 is provided forming with the part 9 practically a complete circle, and attached to the part 9 by means of a coiled spring 13. The end of each of the parts 9 and 12 may be secured in the ends of the coiled spring in any approved manner. The part 12 has a portion 14 extending at an angle thereto parallel with the shank of the member 7 when in the relation shown in Fig. 3. On the shank 7 is a ring 15 preferably formed of a series of coils of a spring similar to the spring 13 having an internal diameter sufliciently great to engage around the shank 7 and the end lt when the part is fastened on a cover, as is indicated in Fig. 3. The ring 15 is slidable on the shank to enable the parts 9 and 13 to be separated as shown in Fig. 4, to remove the device from the knob of the cover or to place it thereon as the case may be. The spring 13' enables the device to be closed tightly about the knob and also adapts it for use with knobs of some little difference in size as will be readily understood.
The part 4 heretofore mentioned, being bent at right angles to the part 3, lies in the path of movement of the member 7 when the cover is opened as is indicated in Fig. 1, forming a support for the cover, the parts being positioned in such manner that the cover stands in a nearly upright position when open.
By spreading or contracting the loop 8, the device is adapted for use with jars of various diameters as the center of the terminal ring formed by the parts 9 and 12 from the hinge bolt 2 may be varied to suit the various conditions.
With a device of the character described, a cover for glass or earthenware vessels may be held in hinged relation with the body of the vessel and accidental displacement and breakage of the cover is avoided, and as a further precaution against breakage the flange 20 of the cover may be provided with a felt or rubber. gasket as may to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is p 1 1. A deviceofthe character described comprising a ring shaped member' liaving' terminal parallel ends' bent substantially at a right angle to the body portion, saidparallel portions havingapertures in alinement and one of said portions extending beyond the other and having a terminal end: bent at a right, angle thereto, a bolt extending through said apertures- .adapted to bind the meniberabout a-jar,-a cover holder member pivoted on the'saidi bolt and:l1tV111g21;=t1 1111 nal yieldable loop portion for engagingabout the knob of a cover, said loop ,portion being. formed of two ,parts, ayieldablehinge member connecting said parts,- meansfor securing the loop portion about the knob, the terminal "bent portion of the body member extending into the-path ofmovementof ing the-member in place, a cover holder :in hinged relation with the said first-named: bodywmember' and terminating in a portion adapted to be'securedxabout: the knob of: a cover, said cover member having an upwardly extending; U shaped. bend intermediate the hinge 'point :and terminal portion in a plane at a right angle to the plane of the cover provldin a member y1eldable in a longitudinal irect-ion whereby the substantially at right angles to the body portion, the end portions being apertured, a bolt engaging inwthe aperture whereby the cover vmay be tightly bound in place, a cover holder =member 'pivotedly mounted on thesaid bolt, said member termii'mting in a half-loopportion, a complemcntn'ry half loop portion, a coiled spring connecting the two hal-f-loopportions, the complementary halfloop portion terminating in an end bent. substantially at a right angle to the main part thereof and a ring slidable on the :shank of the cover holder member adapted to assover the said bent end of the complementary loopaportion to bind the loop-about theknob of'theeover, oneof the ends ofthe said body member being bent to extend into the path. of movement of the cover member providing a rest therefor when ithe' cover is :turned to open position substantially as described.
In t'estimony whereof, I sign this specification;
ARTHUR- J. .HOLDSWOIRTH.
