To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMASA. H. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hinges for Doors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a certain new and improved combination in spring hinges for doors whereby greater simplicity, cheapness and a neater appearance are obtained by making the hinges themselves take the place of certain parts commonly employed in a door spring and also by utilizing a portion of the door spring to take the place of certain parts of the hinges.

These hinges are, however, not provided with the ordinary pins or pintles the function of I the latter being performed by a torsion rod D, extending between and through the hinges so that the knuckles of the latter may turn upon it. This torsion rod D, is secured against rotation in the leaf of the hinge, O, which is secured to the door, by means of a triangular portion (1, fitting in a correspondingly shaped hole, 0, in the leaf. The upper end of the rod D, is also triangular in cross section and has a toothed disk (1', fitted to said triangular portion and provided around its periphery with a series of notches adapted to engage with a shoulder 0', upon the leaf of the hinge O, which is secured to the casing. The disk at, slides up and down upon the triangular respectively, in the ordinary manner, the rod is inserted in place and turned up to the desired tension by means of a wrench fitted to the upper end. When the necessary strength is obtained the toothed disk is slipped down over the shoulder c, securely engaging the torsion rod therewith. As this rod may be twisted ineither' direction it is adapted equally as well to a door swung from either side.

By means of the combination elfected by my invention it should be noticed that there is a great saving in the number of parts required in the use of a torsion spring of this sort. In the first place therod requires no end attachment to the door and easing as such attachments are furnished by the ordinary leaves of the hinges. In the second place the pins or pintles of the hinge are done away with, their functions being perters Patent- 1. In spring hinges, the combination of two hinges with a torsion rod in a single piece extending between said hinges and acting as a common pintle therefor, said rod being secured to opposite leaves one upon each hinge and placed under tension to swing the door.
