Patented Nov. 11, 1913.
Application nledlovember 21, 1912. Seria/1K0. 732,669,
T o all whom t may concern: Be it known that I, EL] N. BALDWIN, Jr., a .citizen of the United States, residing at Stratford, county of Faireld, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Concealed Hinges, 'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of concealed hinges illustrated and describedA in my pending application Serial Number y 714,551, filed August 12, 1912, in whichthe hinge is ,so constructed as to be wholly concealed in the closed position, lies flush with the surface of the amb in the open position and positively retains the-door out of contact with un automobile or coach body in the open position, and my present invention has for its object to provide a hinge of this character disclosing no opening into the jamb 1n the open position, such an openmg having been unavoldable 1n every hinge heretofore produced, This I accomplish by' providing an arc-shaped carrying arm for the door, adapted to swing under an outer plate coverin the face of the jamb, which passes throng ra slot between the base plate ot thejamb member and said outer plate, which slot is always filled by the carrying arm. In other Words, the carrying arm passes into and out of the jamb pocket at the vside of thepocket and the side of the jamb instead of jamb.
With this end in View I have devised the novel concealed hinge of which the following descriptionn in connection with the accompanying drawing is a specification, reference characters being used to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section on the line 1-1 in Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows, the door being in the closed position; Fig. 2 a similar View showing the hinge in plan and the door in the open position; Fig. 3 a view partly in section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1, looking in the direction' of the arrows, showing the hinge in elevation and partly broken away; Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4 in Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows, the hinge being in elevation in the open position; Fig. 5 a section on the line 5- 5 in'Figs. 1 and 3, looking in the direction ofl the arrows, show ing the face of the jamb, with the hinge in the closed position, and Fig. 6 is a section on the line indicated by G'in Fig. 2, looking through the face of the Heretofore, so far as I am aware, in every in the .direction of the arrow, the jamb mem-` ber being in elevation.' Y i 10 denotes the doorlnember of the hinge,"
as awho-le, 11 the jamb member, 12 a door, 13 a jamb and 25 a pocketin the jamb into which the jamb member is recessed. The jamb member comprises a .base plate 14 which for convenience I describe as lying in the verticalplane, attaching flanges 1,5' which lie in the vertical plane atvangles to, the plane of. the base late and side plates 16 which lie in the. orizontal Y plane and connect the `attaching flanges to, the-base plate. The door member comprises an attachingplatc 17, an arc-shaped carrying arm 18 connected thereto andan attachingarm 19 formed integral with the carrying arm. The base plate and the attaching arm are provided with corresponding hinge eyes 20 through which a pin 21 passes 1n the usual manner. It should be noted that the design of the two members of the hinge is such that each member may be formed integral from sheet metal and that the attaching arm and the carrying arm of the door member are made relatively wide, ywhich gives them great strength and enables them to carry any amount of weight that can be placed upon them under the ordinary conditions of use. In the closed posit-ion the carrying arm swings into the pocket be tween the side plates of the jamb member.
hinge of this character the carrying arm has passed in and out, in swinging to the closed and open positions, through a large and unsightly opening in the face of the jamb, which it was impossible to cover. In my present hinge the door member is so designed as to enable me to cover the opening in the 'fac-e of the jamb, between the attaching anges 15 of the jamb` member, by means of an outer plate 22 secured to the jamb by the screws 23 which secure the jamb member. The hinge eyes, the carrying arm and the attaching arm are so laid out relatively to each other as to permit the carrying arm to be curved in an arc of a circle of which the hinge pin is the center and to swing under the outer plate and through a slot 24 in the base plate of the door member, that is at the side of the jamb member and the jamb and wholly within the face line instead of through the face of the j amb. The attaching arm lies at a more or less acute angle to the carrying arm and the latter at a moreor less acute angle to attaching plate 17 which is secured to the door. In the closed position of the door, as in Fig. 1, the outer plate will lie in the angle between the carryin plate and the attaching plate. The door 1s shown as pr0- vided wlth a rearwardv extension 26 which covers the slot in the closed position. In Fig. 4'tl1e ends of the outer plate are shown as made longer than the jamb member and closed about the attaching fianges, to retain said plate in engagement with the member.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A hinge of the characterdescribed con` sisting ofa jamb member having a base plate and a door member comprising a carrying arm passing through the base plate and adapted to swing wholly within the face. line of the amb member. f
2. A hinge of the character described consisting of a jamb member having a base plate and a door member comprisnganl attaching plate, a carrying arm.l andan attaching arm pivoted to the base plate, said carrying arm passing through the amb member Wholly Within the-face line of said member.
3. A hinge of the character described"con-V i sisting of a'jamb member having a base plate and a'door member comprising an attaching plate, a carrying arm, an attaching arm pivoted to the base plate, said carrying arm passing through the jamb member wholly within the face line of the jamb member, and an outer plate adapted to cover the j amb member.
4. A hinge of the character described comprising a jamb member having a base plate with a slot, and a door member comprlsing an arc-shaped carrying arm lying 1n said slot and adapted to swing wholly within the face line of the jamb member and an attaching arm pivoted to the jamb member.
5. A hinge of the character described comprising a jamb member provided with a slot, a door memberI comprising an arcshaped carrying arm lying in said slot and an attaching arm pivoted to the jamb member, anda plate covering the face of the jamb member under which the carryingarm moves.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
