HOLDER FOR BEER-CASE COVERS.

To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Holder for Beer- Case Covers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening the paper covers now commonly placed over cases of bottled beer with the purpose in view of protecting the fluid from the deleterious effect had thereon by continued exposure to sun-light, and to this end my object is to afford a simple, inexpensive, and effective device through use of which said covers can be most quickly locked in position and as readily detached or removed. These desiderata I attain through the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective depicting one end of a beer case, or other receptacle, with the device of my invention disposed in its proper position just beneath the opening provided for the hand; Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view, on enlarged scale, along line A-B of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 a perspective, on enlarged scale, depicting the formation of an element of the device which is not clearly shown in Fig. 2.

In the practice of this invention I preferably employ a piece of light spring metal which is rebent upon itself to form a. supporting surface l and a gripping member or jaw 2, a portion of the latter being normally retained, by reason of the character of metal employed, substantially against the face of surface l. Surface l is secured to the inner face of the opposite end pieces 3 of the receptacle at a point just below the apertures 4 provided for the insertion of the hand and this brings the device substantially above the level of the tops of the bottles. Each of the end pieces 3 is provided with a circular aperture 5 in which is disposed the U-shaped portion 6a of a member 6, the same comprising flanges 6b which lie flat against and are secured to the inner surface of said end pieces by means of screws or nails inserted through openings 6c. Through an aperture 61 of member 6 is projected the shank of a sharpened pin 7, the same carrying a helical spring 8 which is retained between a metal ring 9 and the apex of portion 6a of member 6, one extremity of said pin being coiled to form an eyelet 7a affording a hold for the hand and its opposite extremity normally projecting through suitable openings la, 2, provided in surface 1 and jaw 2.

In use, the bottles or other articles which it is desired to protect from light having been placed in the receptacle, a iiexible cover 10, usually consisting of a piece of cardboard, is placed thereover. Pin 7 is then drawn outward, the ends of said cover bent downward and forced between surface l and jaw 2, and said pin then released, whereupon its sharpened end pierces the cover and so locks it in place. The cover being usually of a rather light weight of paper, it will ordinarily be removed, when it is desired to use the contents of the receptacle, simply by an upward pull which results in tearing loose its extremities from engagement with pin 7.

Although I have herein described my device as embracing the use of spring metal and have stated that jaw 2 is normally retained against the face of surface l, yet the right is reserved of forming parts l and 2 from any material which continued use may indicate as more desirable than spring metal; nor do I wish to be limited to a construction in which a portion of jaw 2 is normally retained against surface l.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A receptacle having members arranged' parallel to and secured upon its end walls adapted to receive a cover for the receptacle-contents, and mechanism disposed substantially within said Vwalls adapted to transfix said cover.

2. A receptacle having members arranged parallel to and secured upon its end walls adapted to frictionally grip a cover for the receptacle-contents, and mechanism disposed substantially within said walls adapted to transix said cover.

3. A cover-holder for receptacles comprising a resilient member adapted to receive a portion of a cover for the receptacle-contents, a rod normally transxing said member, a spring secured upon said rod, and devices holding said spring under compression, said rod disposed substantially within a wall of the receptacle and adapted to be moved against the resistance of said spring.

4. A cover-holder for receptacles comprising a resilient member adapted to friotionally grip a portion of o cover for the receptacle-Contents, a rod normally transxing said member, a spring secured upon Said rod, and devices holding said springunder compression, said rod dispoed substantially Within a Wall of the receptacle and adapted to be moved against the resistance of said spring.
