Description

H. J. YORK.
HOLDER FOR CONTAINERS. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 2, 1920.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
HENRY J. YORK, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
I-IO-LDER FOR CONTAINERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 24, 1920.
Application filed February 2, 1920. Serial No. 355,789.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY J. YORK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State My invention relates to improvements in holders for containers and the like wherein a pair of spring clips operate in conjunction with a perforating cover hingedly connected thereto whereby said container may be perforated for dispensing and the contents thereof protected from exposure to the atmosphere.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved perforating and protective holder for containers for volatile and other liquids normally affected by exposure to the atmosphere It is also an object of the invention to provide a new and improved construction having a maximum efliciency with few and simple parts easily assembled and adapted to effectively hold a container during the dispensing process.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide improved means for easily providing diametrically opposed apertures within the top of a container and the like, one for the admission of atmosphere and the other for dispensing the contents of said container.
The invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like char acters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which Figure 1 is a broken side elevation, partly in section of a container disclosing my improvement applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1 disclosing a rear view of the device in a dispensing position.
The present state of the art discloses holders for containers wherein a pair of spring clips or the like are provided with openings diametrically opposed to the handle. In devices of this kind a full container is only held by frictional engagement of the spring clips when in a dispensing position which frictional engagement is comparatively light and entirely inadequate for the purpose thereby sometimes permitting the container to drop through the openings in said clips.
In the present invention I propose to provide a new and novel construction whereby the container is not only efiiciently engaged and held but a portion of the supporting members are actually under the container.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate upper and lower horizontally disposed spring clips having openings in the side thereof. A connecting handle comprises a vertically disposed member 3 and a member 4 riveted to the vertical member 3 and clips 1 and bent to form a convenient means for a hand grip as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
circular cover 6 is hingedly mounted upon the upper end of the connecting handle as at 7 and is provided with an arcuate integral extension or thumb piece 8 by means of which said cover 6 may be conveniently raised.
The cover 6 is provided adjacent the periphery thereof with a perforating screw ,9 which is conical in shape and is provided with a screw shank 11 which engages a knob 12 upon the top of said cover 6. By means of this novel arrangement the screw 9 becomes a, perforating means for a container 14 within the clips 1 and also a closing means for said perforation to prevent exposure to the atmosphere of the contents of said container 14.
To assist in retaining or supporting the container 14 within the clips 1 I have provided a lateral extension 16 formed integral with the bottom or lower end of the connecting handles which projects inwardly and engages the bottom of the container 14 and supports the same within the clips 1.
In operation the container 14 is passed through the side openings within the clips 1 and upon the lateral extension 16 of'the connecting handle. The cover 6 is laid upon the top of the container 14 and suflicient pressure is applied to the knob 12 to force the perforating conical screw 9 through the top of said container 14 as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings. To permit the entrance of air as well as the passage of the contents of the container when dispensin the container 14 is given a rotation o approxicover 6 and knob 12 is sufficient to retain.
the perforating screw 9 within the dispensing aperture in the top of the container 14 thereby preventing the congeahng of any of the contentsvof the container which may cling to the top adjacent or within said opening, which congealing, as in the case of milk, might easily sour said milk and detrimentally affect the remaining contents of said container 14.
The cover 6 is arranged to lie snugly upon the top of the can, or rather on the top edges thereby inclosing the remaining vent aperture and preventing the exposure of the contents of said container through said vent aperture.
While in a dispensing position it will be observed that portions of both spring clips -1 will rest under and thereby efiectively support the container. While in this position the cover 6 is raised by means of the thumb piece or extension 8 of the cover 6 to withdraw the perforating member or screw 9 from the dispensing aperture thereby readily permitting the passage of the contents thereof.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a new and improved holder for containers and the like wherein the container is adequately supported in a dispensing position as well as improved means for automatically closing the dispensing and vent apertures of the can in a non-dispensing position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A holder for containersand the like comprising spring clips adapted to engage said container and having openings therein for the insertion of said container; a handle connecting said clips adjacent the openings therein whereby a portion of said clips will be under and thereby support said container when the handle is substantially horizontally disposed, and a cover hingedly connected to the upper end of the connecting handle and arranged to cover said container; and a thumb piece formed integral with the cover and extending adjacent the handle whereby said cover and perforation closing means may be raised from the top of said container.
2. A holder for containers and the like comprising spring clips adapted to engage said container and having openings therein for the insertion of said container; a handle connecting said clips adjacent the openings therein whereby a portion of said clips will be under and thereby support said container when the handle is substantially horizontally disposed; and a cover hingedly connected to the upper end of the connecting handle and arranged to cover said container; and means for preventing longitudinal nlrovement of the container within the spring c ips.
3. A holder for containers and the like comprising spring clips adapted to engage said container and having openings therein for the insertion of said container; a handle connecting said clips adjacent the openings therein whereby a portion of said clips will be under and thereby support said container when the handle is substantially horizontally disposed, and a cover hingedly connected to the upper end of the connecting handle and arranged to coyer said container; and a lateral extension formed integral with the connecting handle and arranged to engage the bottom of the container *to prevent longitudinal movement thereof within said clips.
4. A holder for containers and the like comprising upper and lower spring clips arranged to inclose a container and having openings therein for the insertion of said container; a vertically disposed connecting handle connecting the clips adjacent the openings therein whereby a portion of said clips will rest under and support said container when dispensing therefrom; a lateral extension formed integral withthe connecting handle at the bottom thereof and arranged to engage the bottom of the container to support said container within said clips; a cover hingedly connected to the up per end,of the connecting handle and arranged to cover a container within the clips; a knob mounted upon the cover; and a perforating screw depending from the bottom of the cover and engaging the knob to secure said knob and perforating screw to said cover said screw being arranged to perforate the cover of the container when the knob is pressed, said container being rotatable within the clips whereby diametrically opposed apertures may be provided within said container.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my signature.
