CLIP FOR FOUNTAIN-PENS, PENCILS, AND THE LIKE.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
Application led November 19, 13 12. Serial No. 732,263.
To all whom t may concern:
Be itfknown that I, HENRY C. Manin, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Maywood, in the county of Bergen and 5 State of New Jersey, have invented certain lnew and useful Improvements in Clips for Fountain-Pens, Pencils, and the Like, of which the following is a full and clear speciication. .A l
My invention relates tothe construction yand mounting of clips used in connection with fountain pens, pencils and similar articles for `detachably securing them to the pocket of the wearer. It has already been 1,5 proposed to form'lsuch clips of resilient sheet metal,'\vire and the like, bent into such form as to provide a yieldingr engagement of the ret-aininof finger with the cloth of the pockets which vslides into engagement between the 20, retaining finger and the body Vof the pen'or the like. These members have been secured tothe pen or the likel in Various ways such `as by external spring bands and by integral l tongues or separate rivets Which pass through ,shell wail of the pen or- .the like.. 4
, The of hol e1-or clip -inwhich the ,retaining finger issecured in place by a member which passes through the perforated shell wall'of the pen or the like.
It may be stated here that the invention is applicable to fountain pens, pencils and other articles to be carried in the pocket, but
to illustrate the same I shall refer 'to an embodiment thereof employed in connection with an adjustable feed pencil, which it will be understood, comprises a tubular shell er Vcasing' forming the mam body of the pencil,
.40 a lead or-'other marking member longitudinally disposing therein and a feed mechanism for thema'rking member by which the marking member is projected for use and may be withdrawn into the shell if desired,
when not in use.
rThe objects of my invention are mainly to improve the operation of the clip in securing the article to the pocket and to so secure the clip to the article that it shall be practicaily '50 rigid a nd cannot become disengaged by wear or use. Y
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a pocketpencil with the clip attached.- y Fig. f2 isa front elevation of the blankV from,"`wh1hpresent improvementsare in that type the clip is formed. Fig. 3 is a'sectional side elevation of a. portion of the pencil shell and the clip secured thereto. Fig. 4 is' a front elevation of a Slightly modified form and Fig. 5 is a sectional lside elevation showing a portion of the. pencil shell `with the modified form of clip applied thereto.
Referring now more specifically to said drawings l0 indicates the pencil shell, 1t the marking member and. 1 2 the feed operating member therefor. The. clip shown' as comprising the resilient retaining finger 13 of ordinary configuration, base or bearing portion 14, 'which rests firmly against the surface of the pencil shell 10, and the attaching or securinf't tonguel. -lsshoi'n in Ais formed with the securing tongue l5 of less width than the bearing surface of base port-ion 14 which latter is perforated at 16 and preferably countersunk at 17. The per-- foration 1li and conntersink li' correspond fin dimensions with the securing tongue l5 so that the latter can be passed through the perforation 16 and lient over and seated in the countersnk 117, in attaching the clip to the shell. This operation is illustrated in Fig. 3 in which the shell 10 shown as havingv upper and lower perforations through which the tongue 15 is passed first through the upper perforation `and then after being bent downward throingh the lower perforation 4of the shell and out through the per The end of the tongue is then bent upwardly nently retained. It will be seen that this construction provides for the clipbeing secured to the shell by points of attachment which are spaced' apart substantially the full length of'the base portion, thus insuring a high degree of firmness, and lin addition to this feature that the base portion lll and tongue pass entirely around a portion of the metal of the shell l() and are locked together by the engagement of the end oit the tongue with the base portion in the countersink i7. so that the clip cannot become dis engaged from the shell, due to use and wear. 'In the modification shown in Figs. Lland 5, t-he construction and arrangement is in most of its parts substantially the same as that above illustrated and described. In this fcrm, hivever, shell `10 has secured to it, a clip comprisingI a retaining finger 18, a bearof blank from which the clip may be 1nade,`
Fig. Q, the blank .from which the clip is made foi-ation 16 of thevbase portion of the clip.
into the countersink 17, where it -is permav projecting longitudinally 4jecting from the end :base portion,
ing surface or base portion 19, perforated at ner as above described hut which, upon being `brought out through the perforation 20 in the hase portion l19 of the clip, isturned` upwardly and forced down flat against the outer surface of base portion 19. The effect in either form is substantially the same with the possible exceptions in favor of the forni illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, that the `en.- gagenient of the end of.tongue 15 With the base portion is more snug with the countersinlr and hence more secure and the end of the tongue is protected betteragainst becoming dislodged.`
l claim: v c
l. A clip of the character described coin-A prising in combination al hase portion with a perforationnear one end thereof, a retain ing linger, and an attachment tongue pro-I of said base portion which is remote from the perforation, cor. responding in -Width with 'said perforation and of greater length tha'n the distance from saidvperforation to said remote end of. hase. portion 2. A clip of the character described, conipr'ising inl combination a perforated baseportion, a retaining' finger integral with and from one end of said hase portion and an attachment tongueI integral with and projecting vfrom the other said hase portion, said attachment' end of tongue being of a Width Correspendingr with the Width of said perforation 'in the hase portion and of a length greater thantlie distance from its 'unction with said hase non "tion to said perforation in the hase port-ion.
3. A clip ofthe character described, coinprising in combination a perforated basepor-A tion having a countersink adjacent thereto,
` aA retaining finger integral with and project ing longitudinally from one end of said and an attachment tongue in tegral With and projecting longitudinally froin the other end of said hase portion, said tongue being of a. Width corresponding with` j the said perforation and countersink in the base Yportion yand of a length greater than the distance froiii its junction with said base porger projecting tion to said perforation plus the length ofl said countersinlr.
il. clip of the character described, cornprising in combination a hase portion having a perforation near one endI thereof, a ret-ainm ing finger integral With and projecting longitudinally from the perforated 'end of said hase portion and an attachment tongue intefrral with and proj ectiiig from 'the othereiid of said hase portion, said tongue being of a width corresponding with said perforation in the base portion and of a length rea-ter than the distance from' its junction with the hase portion to said perforation. f
' A 4device of the character described, comprising in combination a tuhularjsliell having perforations therein longitudinally spaced apart and a clip comprising a 'hase portion of a length commensurate with the distancebetween said. perforations in 'the shell and'having a perforation neurone end adapted to register Lwith one of saidshell perforations, ayielding retaining finger projecting longitudinally froiii the perforated end of said hase portion andan. attachment tongue j aiojecting` longitudinally froin the other end. of said hase Y passing inwardly through one of said shell perforations and outwardly through the other shell perforation and the registering perforation in the base ineinher and' folded over againstwthe outer surface'of saidfbase ineinher to retain the clip in position.`
6 A device yof the character described, coinprising in vcombination a tubular shell. having perforations longitudinally spaced apart therein, and a clip having a base portion `with a perforation and couiitersinkiiear oneend, a yielding retaining finger projecting lonvitudinally'from the perforated end -of said thase portion, and an attachment linfi'oni the other end'of said hase portion and passing' inwardly through one oflsaidshell perforations and outwardly through the other shell perforation and said base perforationv with its end bent over and seated `insaidcountersinli.'
