To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDWARD E. Mo- SWEENEY and HERBERT E. SEELEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pen and pencil attachments, and has for an object to provide an eraser adapted for adjustment upon any pencil, or similar instrument.

A particular object of the invention is to provide an eraser holder adapted to be engaged with a pencil adjacent the writing point to hold the eraser in position for use without removing the pencil from the hand, and without changing its position materially from that occupied when writing.

Another important object of the device is to provide a holder adapted to hold the eraser in a convenient position and at the same time be adapted to allow adjustment of the eraser in the holder when the eraser becomes worn.

Another object is to provide a simple device for yieldably engaging an eraser against removal from the device.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side view of the device in writing position, Fig. 2 shows the device in erasing position, Fig. 3 is an end view of the device.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a holder comprising a pencil-receiving sleeve 10, slitted to allow its yielding engagement over pencils of different sizes, and having its outer end tapered slightly to engage over the point of a pencil and prevent sliding of the holder inwardly from the point. The sleeve 10 is formed by being stamped from sheet material in the customary manner. Secured a spaced distance inwardly of the outer end of the sleeve 10 there is an erasercarrying sleeve 11, extending tangentially with relation to the periphery of the pencil and extending slightly in an oblique direction toward the point with respect to a plane bisecting the sleeve 10 longitudinally, and extending through the junction of the sleeve 11 therewith.

It will be seen that both ends of the sleeve 12 are open so that a cylindrical eraser may be introduced therein and an end portion allowed to project outwardly of the operating end of the device as indicated at 13. The end 14 of the sleeve 12 is provided with an inwardly extending collar 15 adapted to engage frictionally with the eraser to hold it against sliding displacement in the sleeve 12. It will be seen that as the eraser becomes worn at the operative end it may be forced outwardly through the sleeve to present an additional erasing portion, and when a very small portion of the eraser is left a pencil point or other suitable pointed instrument may be introduced in the end 14 to project the eraser still farther, or to effect its removal.

In writing the device may be used as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to erase a penciled character a quarter turn of the pencil brings the eraser in position for use as shown in Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that the grasp upon the pencil for writing does not have to be changed for the erasing operation.

It will be noted that the sleeve 11 is slightly tapered toward its lower end, so that an eraser will be engaged securely adj acent its point of use, and prevent its slipping backward into the sleeve. The outer end of the sleeve compresses the eraser which bulges over the end of the retaining sleeve and is engaged securely thereby.

What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described Edmprising a resilient clamp sleeve adapted to be engaged over the point of a pencil to be held thereon, and an eraser-carrying sleeve open at each end secured thereto adjacent its outer end, said last named sleeve extending tangentially with relation to the pencilengaging sleeve, to allow the introduction of an eraser in one end to be forced outwardly of the opposite end for use, said eraser-holding sleeve being tapered toward its operating end for compressive engagement with an eraser to prevent inward slipping thereof, and being disposed obliquely with relation to a plane extending at right angles to the axis of the second named sleeve, for the operations described.

2. A device of the class described comprising a pencil-engaging sleeve adapted to be engaged over the point of a pencil to be retained adjacent thereto, and a circular eraser-carrying sleeve secured by its sides to the periphery of the pencil-engaging sleeve adjacent the outer end thereof, said sleeve being open at each end.
