OSMOND D. READ, DAVIESS COUNTY, KENTUCKY.
LAP-RING.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,292, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filed February 24, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSMOND D. READ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap-Rings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in laprings; and it has for its objects to provide for securely fastening the hinged lap-section in such manner that it may be readily opened or closed, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved lap-ring; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view thereof; and Fig. 3, a perspective view, showing the lap-section split.
The letter A indicates the main portion of the ring, which is oblong or in the shape of a chain-link, asusual, and is open on one side for the reception of the hinged lap-section B. This is slotted at one end, as indicated by the letter C, the slot setting over the end D of the ring, which is cut away on each side for the purpose. The opposite end of the ring is formed with a shank and cross-head, E, and the adjoining end of the lap-section is out out on its under side at F and F, so as to fit over the said shank and cross-head, forming a smooth and secure joint. The said lap-section is formed with a slight recess on the under side, and the crossheadwith a similar recess on its under side, and in the recess on the lap-section is pivoted a thumb-latch, G, by means of which the parts may be securely fastened when the lap-section is closed.
It is evident that, instead of the lap-section being slotted and fitted over the end of the lap-ring, the end of the ring may be slotted and the end cut and fitted in the slotted end of the ring.
As constructed it will be seen that the ring when closed will present a smooth and unbroken surface, while the cross-head connection will give the utmost strength, as it cannot be pulled out of the lap-section by any ordinary strain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
In combination with the main body A, having the shank and cross-head E, the hinged lap-section B, provided with the recesses F F, and the latch G, pivoted in a recess in the un: der side of the lap-section. whereby, when the parts are closed, the cross-head is locked in the cross-recess of the lap-section and the latch secreted on the inner side of the ring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSMOND D. READ.
