Abstract

FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: bipolar electrolyzer for production of magnesium, using working chambers with cathodes, anodes and vertical bipolar electrodes positioned in them and installed without any gap with the bottom, and a built-up chamber separated from the working chambers by partitions with windows, is featured by the fact that, with the aim of stabilization of the electrolysis process due to continuous hydrodynamic removal of slime from the working chambers, cells for accumulation and removal of slime, that are open from the top, are made in the electrolyzer walls opposite the working chamber; the cells are connected under the electrodes to the built-up chamber through a duct with a cross-section making up 1 to 5% of the electrode working surface. The cathode part of the bipolar electrolyzer is positioned above the bottom level by 1-2 interelectrode distances. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency.
