Oppfinnelsen relaterer seg til kontrastmidler i partikkelform, spesielt kontrastniidler for MR-avbildning. med kjerner av metalloksid, fortrinnsvis superparamagnetisk jernoksid, og et overtrekk med lav deknLngstetthet av et polyelektrolyttisk dekningsmiddel som kan være enten strukturelle polysakkarider eller syntetiske polymerer, spesielt polyaminosyrer. Til forskjell fra konvensjonelle overtrukne partikkel stoffer har de nye partiklene en redusert eller slett ingen virkning på kardiovaskulære parametre, blodplatereduksjon, komplementaktiviscring og blodkoagulering.
