Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily and inexpensively obtain the title homogeneous and high- purity powder having a fixed composition and practically uniform particle diameter by burning a mixture of the fine powder of the first oxide constituting the composite oxide and the powder of the metal constituting the second oxide in a flame. CONSTITUTION:The fine powder of the first oxide (e.g., alumina, zirconia, magnesia, and TiO2) constituting the desired composite oxide having <=20mu mean particle diameter and the powder of the metal (e.g., the powder of Al, Si, etc.) having <=40mu mean particle diameter and >=99% purity and constituting the second oxide are mixed in a specified ratio to obtain mixed powder 2. The powder 2 is sent from a hopper 1, and introduced into a reaction vessel 15 with the aid of a carrier gas 12 (e.g., O2) from a raw material supply part 10 through a pipe 3. Meanwhile, a combustible gas 13 is introduced into the vessel 15 from a pipe 4, and ignited to form a flame 9. Consequently, a uniform mixture is formed, the obtained fine powder of the composite oxide is separated and collected through a blower 7 and a dust collector 6, and the desired composite oxides such as spinel, zircon, mullite, and forsterite are obtained.
