Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 ［産業上の利用分野］ この発明は単一モード光ファイバの融着接続方法に関し
、特にコアの偏心の大きい場合に有効な方法に関するも
のである。
［従来の技術］ 融着接続の際の、光ファイバの移動と放電とのタイムチ
ャートを第５図に示す。なお、縦軸の光フアイバ移動の
、０の線は端面の間隔がゼロの状態、−は離れている状
態、＋は押込んだ状態を、それぞれ示す。
光フアイバ移動の折れ線に沿って示したＡ−Ｄの各段階
について、説明する。
・Ａの段階： 第６１ｆ！Ｊ（ａ）のように、光ファイバ１０の端面間
が少し離れた状態で、コアの調心を行なう。
・Ｂの段階： 第６図（ｂ）のように、電極２０によるアーク放電を開
始し、光ファイバ１０を前進させる。
・Ｃの段階： 第６図（Ｃ）のように、端面を接触させた後、さらに押
込む。
ΦＤの段階： しばらく加熱を続行し、それから放電を終了する。
［発明が解決しようとする問題点］ 第７図（ａ）のように、コア１２が偏心していない場合
は、融着接続後も、同図（ｂ）のように、コア１２は真
直になっていて、問題はない。。
しかし、第８図（ａ）のように、コア１２が太きく偏心
していると、上記Ｃの段階において、両方の光ファイバ
１０の接触する部分に偶力が働き、接触部分が傾斜して
（同図（ｂ）および（Ｃ））、融着したファイバが部分
的に湾曲する。そのためにコア１２にもマイクロベンド
が生じて、損失が増大する。
この発明は、上記の問題を解決することのできる、単一
モード光ファイバの融着接続方法の提供を目的とするも
のである。
［問題点を解決するための手段］ 押込み工程の後、光ファイバを引戻し、その後、放電に
よる加熱を終了することを特徴とする。
［その説明］ 光ファイバの移動と放電とのタイムチャートを示す、第
１図について説明する。
Ａ、Ｂ、Ｃの段階は、上記の第５図のＡ、Ｂ。
Ｃのそれぞれの場合と同じである。
なお、Ａの段階における端面の離隔は５〜２０ｇｍ程度
であり、Ｃの段階における押込み量も５〜２０終謬程度
である。
・Ｄの段階； 所定の量だけ押込んだ後、ｔｌの時間だけ加熱を続ける
。この１．は０．５秒程度である。
・Ｅの段階： それから、いったん押込んだ光ファイバを、引戻す。こ
れが本発明の最も大切なところである。
引戻す量は、押込んだ量よりも少し条目にした方がよい
。
そうすると、第２図（ａ）のようにマイクロベンドして
いたコア１２が引き延ばされて、同図（ｂ）のように真
直になる。
なお、コア１２（７）偏心量の少ない場合は、引戻し量
は、押込み量の半分くらいでもよい、また偏心量の非常
に大きい場合は、引戻し量を押込み量の３倍くらいまで
にすることができる。
光ファイバ１０を引戻す速度は、押込むときの速度と同
じでよい、したがってタイムチャートにおける折れ線の
傾斜は、ＣのときもＥのときも同じになる。
・Ｆの段階： 所定量だけ引戻した後、ｔｌの時間だけ加熱を続け、そ
の後放電を終了する。
このｔｌは、０．５〜２秒くらいである。
なお、放電の継続時間は、従来の場合が１秒程度で、本
発明の場合は２〜３秒程度である。
［試験成ｋＲ］ 第３図に、本発明の方法による接続試験結果のヒストグ
ラムを示す。平均値は０．０ｅ　ｄＢ、なお試料の単一
モード光ファイバの、外径は１２５ＪＬ１１、コア径は
９ｇｍ　、コアの偏心は３％　。
また同じ光ファイバの、従来の方法による接続試験結果
を、第４図に示す。平均値は０．１２５　ｄＢであり、
本発明の方法の良いことがよく分る。
［発明の効果］ 押込み工程の後、光ファイバを引戻し、その後、アーク
放電による加熱を終了するので、コアの偏心量の大きい
単一モード光ファイバの場合でも、いったんマイクロベ
ンドしたコアが真直に引き延ばされる。したがって損失
が増大しない。

の状況を順に示す説明図、 第７図（ａ）（ｂ）はコア偏心の無い場合の説明図、 第８図（ａ）〜（Ｃ）はコア偏心の大きい場合の説明図

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 コアの調心を行なう工程と、 アーク放電によつて光ファイバの端部を融着可能な温度
    に加熱しながら、光ファイバの端面を接触させ、それか
    らさらに押込む工程とを含む、単一モード光ファイバの
    融着接続方法において、前記押込み工程の後、光ファイ
    バを引戻し、その後、前記加熱を終了することを特徴と
    する、単一モード光ファイバの融着接続方法。
