Abstract

PURPOSE:To subject steel plates to stable skin pass rolling over the entire length thereof with high accuracy by holding one or the whole of intermediate driving rolls nondriven in the case case of subjecting the steel plates to skin pass rolling with a multiple stages cluster rolling mill. CONSTITUTION:Steel plates are subjected to skin pass rolling with a multiple stages cluster rolling mill constituted of upper, lower work rolls 1a, 1b, each two pieces of upper, lower intermediate driving rolls 2a, 2b, and 2c, 2d and each four pieces of upper, lower backup rolls 3a-3d, 3e-3h. In spite of exertion of screw- down force with an oil hydraulic cylinder 5T in this case, just part of the press- down forces are transmitted to the steel plate between the rolls 1a and 1b on account of the frictional resistance among the rolls, thus resulting in decreased frictional resistance upon starting of rolling and sharply increased press-down forces. These will lead to drawing or rupture of the steel plate. In order to prevent this, one or two of the upper and lower rolls out of each two pieces of the upper, lower rolls 2a-2d are held nondriven, whereby the stable skin pass rolling is accomplished.
