Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the degradation of a light source, by providing a reference white outside the original read region and in the read range of a picture reading element and comparing the output of the picture reading element for this reference white with a reference value. CONSTITUTION:A reference white 14 is fixed in a prescribed position outside the original read range and in the read range of a photoelectric transducer. The reference white has a quantity of reflection light equal to or more than that of the white ground of an oridinary paper for a light source 11 which illuminates an original 10. Reflection lights from the original 10 and the reference white 14 illuminated by the light source 11 are reflected by a mirror 13 and are incident to the photoelectric transducer. The signal from the reference white 14 is held in a peak holding circuit and is displayed. The secular change of the peak holding voltage is compared with a reference voltage to monitor the brightness of the light source 11.
