Abstract

PURPOSE: Free fatty acid in the distillate obtained as a by-product in the deodorization process are previously esterified with a polyhydric alcohol and the resultant distillate is distilled to separate the esters as the residue and obtain the concentrated titled compound used to produce vitamin E or other useful compounds as the distillate.
CONSTITUTION: The deodorization distillate that is obtained as a by-product in the deodorization process of oil such as soybean oil is combined with a di- or more hydric alcohol such as glycerol by about 1.1 times the acid equivalent of the distillate and the free fatty acids are esterified. Then, the reaction mixture is distilled to separate the esterified compounds boiling at high temperature than tocopherol as the residue and the tocopherol concentrate is obtained as the distillate. According to the present invention, tocopherol concentrate is obtained in purer form than in the conventional method where the concentrate is given as the distillation residue, thus the qulity is better and the yield is higher.
